99 Classic Saloon speaker replacements?
Afternoon all, ive been meaning to get my speakers replaced for some better ones but just havent had time to do the research required for a while.
Went in my mates Kia Rio ( the car you can buy for a quid! ) the other day and - admittedly the speakers were more powerful than his car - but the standard factory fit speakers put mine to shame.
I just want some uprated, standard fit speakers that give a bit more oomph - dont want to run an amp or have to do any cutting / fitting. A modest budget of about £300 maximum to do the whole car is all i want to spend on it to be honest.
What can you recommend?
Thanks
Adam

What have you got so far?
What sort of music are you after?
Just a new head unit did me quite nicely for a long time.
Otherwise you could go the whole hog, head unit, amps, speakers, sub woofers etc.

Evening fellas, thanks for the help so far.
The previous owner fitted a new head unit ( Kenwood KDC-133 ) which is good, so i dont want to change that.
The speakers are just the factory fit speakers that you get in the MY99 UK Turbo.
Im only looking to change the speakers, not fit an amp, sub or anything like that as i need my boot space.
I could always go to my local Halfords and sound test some speakers, but then i have the problem of not knowing whether they fit my car or not. I want speakers that just fit straight in as swap with no modifications needed.
I listen to everything from Smooth FM (classic motown, easy listening) through to Metallica and Led Zeppelin - but its mostly rock stuff.
I would prefer speakers that produce a clean, loud note but which can also hit you with deep crisp bass.
Thanks
Adam

I found it easy to remove one of mine from the door (good practice at removing the card!) and take this around with me. you'll find the depth of the speaker to be critical, too deep and your window mechanism will strike the speaker rear. It's handy but not essential if you get the mounting holes to line up.
From memory, some of the Infinity range have a pretty shallow depth.
You could also make two spacers, to bring the speaker out by a distance to stop it getting in the way of the window and mechanism. This is easier than it sounds, and gets rid of the 'holes lining up' problem. MDF is king here, as it's very easy to shape.
I know you're looking for a fuss free installation (as was I!) but sometimes a little modification is required
In terms of the rear, I went for 6x9's which fitted well. You'll find the metal on the rear shelf is ideal to drill and fit the 6x9's. In fact, IIRC the speaker holes are weirdly shaped, but the speaker is tiny - in a frame of some sort. Mounting these is slightly trickey, and the shelf isn't even, and it's hard to get a nice, tight seal on the speaker.
Go with Alcazar's fine advice and road test a few. Halfords aren't great, but they'll do. (slect the head unit closest to your own obviously!) If you can find an ICE specialist then all the better, as they may have more setups and recommendations.
Personally, I chose Boston Acoustic for my fronts, which were bright and clean. The Alpines in the rear (slightly boy racer-ish!) provided the bass/oomph.
If I had my time again (and my Scooby again ) I'd put my money into *very* decent speakers in the front, and average in the rear - blowing the rest of my budget on sound deadening material.
Hope that helps.
Check the FAQ for some very decent installation guides/speaker sizes etc.

Yeah, infinity fit (ive just fitted them to mine in the front) and also JBL's do fit (thats what i had before - yours if you want them?).
But as the man says, wander round and test. Theres nothing worse than buying some speakers and not liking them!
