Default help a thicko

Got a new sti but the standard system is pretty dire
had loads of advice all different
who can tell me the cheapest way of getting a decent sound without changing the unit.
im not looking to fill me boot with subs and whatever you serious peolple go for

Without changing the unit? Not a great chance. Minimum is change door speakers, apply sound deadening and replace headunit.

I agree with JockyTT. I changed mine for ....
Sony CDXMP40 MP3 player - £125
Infinity 6000cs - £85
pocket/lead - £15 (second hand)
Sound Damping - £30
Total - about £255, budget system that's about 100% better than the original. The original head unit was sold on ebay for £120 so I got some money back too.

If you REALLY want to keep the price down, you could do a lot worse than checking out the cheapest CD player on www.cel-direct.com. I just bought one for my friend this week. £79.99 for a 4x50w Clarion CD player - that's gotta be a bargain! All the basic features you could expect for the budget end of the scale (50watts per channel, loudness control, RDS/EON, RCA pre-out for adding an amp later .... and looks simple to use too). Apart from the price, the other surprising thing is that this stereo has a signal-to-noise ratio of 100dB - that basically means, AFAIK, that it's 10% more efficient at belting the music out to the speakers that almost all other stereos.

Yes I did it myself. The head unit is very simple to fit provided you use the Subaru pocket & adaptor cable. The Speakers are a bit more involved but within the capabilities of someone who just about knows which end of a screwdriver to hold (i.e. me)
