Rear speaker installation
#1
Judging by the amount of posts on speaker fitting and collars, mounting, sizes, types, etc, I thought i'd be nice and share my sunday afternoon with you guys!!
Rear speaker upgrade:
The orginal ones are absolute tat and needed replacing with something half decent to fill out the car a bit and provide something other than bass for the passengers in the back.
after a trip to Mobile world on sat, ahving a drool over the BMs, alpine jag, pioneer crysler, I purchased a pair of infinity 655 coax for the parcal shelf, powered (at the moment) off the head unit (which is the powerful 60w 7893), but they needed a collar, so here's what i did.
Use the metal collar as a template, then cut from mdf - the hole left after the collar taken out is sort of 4x6, and to fit the speaker, a suitable collar that could be bolted to the shelf using the exisiting holes and provide mounting space for the speaker had to be made.
Plane it down a bit
The original metal collar and the new mdf one:
drill a few holes, put it in:
The orginal parcel shelf wood/carpet had big enough hole for the speakers to fit through ok, the reason i made the near collars was that the metal ones were not large enough to take the basket of the infinitys.
The orginal grills fitted back onto the shelf; although the infinity grills could have been fitted, i'd rather leave things looking stock and unassuming.
Nick - put this on the FAQ? will email the pics if you need them. Hope this helps!!!!!
Cheers, Si.

Excellent stuff mate. Best thing to do is for me to set you up as a FAQ author then you can add it yourself.
Can you drop me an email with your preferred user name, plus whether you'd like your email address to be visible on the faq, plus any URL you want to associate (your web site for example)?
Cheers,
Nick.

I did exactly the same as you except I mounted the new mount from the underside of the shelf in the boot. Two reasons for this were...
1). Shelf didn't fit back down properly cause of the new height of the mount when mounted on the top.
2). Easier access in the future from the boot to the speakers, don't have to strip out the back of the car to get to them again.
I've got the template at home, keep meaning to scan it in a share it with you guys.

Hmm, I'll do you a favour here. Drop me an email and I'll draw the template of the top mounting collars onto a4, scan it, save as a pdf and email it back to you tomorrow evening. Hows that? Haven't really looked at the underneath too much - I had no problem in fitting the infinitys on the top. Having said that, it would be easier for future removal etc to fit them underneath - but then you get a lot of the speaker protruding into the boot space.
