Hi,i've just bought an Alpine CDA-7893R head unit...
just read the instruction manual,where it tells me to make a direct connection to the +ve battery terminal....
could somebody please tell me why?or offer any other useful fitting tips(i'm quite new to this and would rather not damage/ set fire to anything ,if at all possible)

Because it has a high power internal amp. 4 x 60 watts takes a bit more juice; have a look at the fuse - its a 20amp job. Fitting a direct wire to battery is fairly easy, just poke a hole in the air con grommet and feed the wire through (buy a cable from halfords that'll take the current; i think i bought one that was rated at 27amps) onto the battery terminal.

It not that hard, and i would follow the instruction guide rather than compromise the power feed (and ground, similarly) for sake of an extra 20 mins work.

I somehow imagine it means you need a permanent 12V feed to the unit, rather than specifically running a bit of wire straight from the unit to the battery. There will be a suitable wire in the harness. If you've got a new age, use an Autoleads adaptor to get the volts into the head unit. If you've got a classic, IIRC, they have a buiilt in adaptor and will plug straight into the head unit. This will take care of all the power requirements for your unit.

Most of the wiring adaptors aren't directly designed for seperate power amps, so you may have a little bit more hassle there. Let me know or post again if you haven't got that one sorted.

 

Si - without meaning to contradict you m8, if the speakers are running from a separate power amp, there is no way that the head unit is going to need a bigger power feed than the one it has already got. I could see the benefit if you're running 4 speakers and a sub off the head unit, although IMHO you would still be OK without.

cheers guys...i would rather not run any extra power leads from the battery if at all poss,as i'm already taking the amp and AFR power feeds from there.... as Hades says i won't be using the internal amp....please keep the opinions coming,all advice will be greatly appreciated

Sure, i would agree with that as the maximum power draw will be from the internal amp. It's probably worth hooking it up as per norm and see if its ok, the other thing i was considering is that my old kenwood has an external power supply and fed off that; in all probability the extra power is soley for the amp but the head unit may be designed to run of a slightly higher current than normal.

The worst you're gonna do is blow a fuse; i suppose if you hook it up normally you'll find out - but probably be ok.

the new head unit is working fine,no probs..so far..,however,the overall 'sound quality' is cr@p.....what have i done wrong?

alpine cda 7893r c/d tuner (new)
infinity 6 1/2" components (new)..tweeters,on wing mirror covers.
rear 6x9 pioneer A6957'S (2nd hand)
500w 12" pioneer sub,in ported box (2nd hand)
denon dc800 5 channel amp (2nd hand)..which is running everything.
....i'm not after BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!,ala lashed up nova...but,as it is, the base is very 'soggy ,making the overall sound,very'tinny'

i've used proper audio cables everywhere,where have i messed up?

edited to say,..that it sounded better with my old kenwood unit and
that the new alpine should control the sub,independantly,but it doesn't!!
