Cool

When I changed the speakers in the front of my MY02 STi, there were already tweeters in the door, (I've only fitted the main cone so far, not the tweeters). Does anyone know if these come from a crossover, or are they just a spur off of the main cable?

(I'm trying to work out if I can get away with not having to find somewhere for the huge crossover box that comes with the infinitys)

Cheers,
Iain

Iain, have a look at the tweeter unit. I suspect that you'll find a capacitor in fairly plain view somewhere there - little cylindrical thingy...

I would say you're best off using the infinity x-overs, as in my opinion you will want to attenuate the tweeters somewhat. Plus you know that the crossovers are matched to your components.

In fact, definitely use the crossovers. Don't try to cut corners - it'll end in tears. Sorry

Fair enough. I assume the capacitor is to block out the low frequencies, (which enables them to have the tweeter and main cone off of the same wire)?

Also, any suggestion as to where I could fit the crossover unit. Trouble is that it's not exactly small and I'm not sure where in the door I could put it.

Thanks,
Iain

In the door, cable tied to the side impact bar?

I fitted infinity reference components in mine. Here's some pointers...

1. The crossover fits in the door... theres a kind of oval hole. I sort of jammed it in, and then used duck tape to hold it in place. Couldn't find anywhere better.

2. I scrapped the original tweeters. I made new mounts for the tweeters from spare pc blanking plates... you can bend them into shape in a vice. I cut little tabs into the plate which i folded up next to the tweeter, and use some glue gun glue to hold them in place.

3. i made an mdf spacer to hold the main woofer.

4. sounded a treat.

Cheers, I've already got the woofers fitted, it's just the tweeters and crossover. Which side of the plastic sheet did you fit the crossover? (I presume you meant the oval is in the door panel?)

Thanks,
Iain

I don't like fitting passive x-overs in doors, I always fit them inside the car.

Of all the Subarus I've worked on (must be 200+ by now) I have never found a dry door except brand spanking new. Still in the showroom type brand spanking new.

They don't seem to have drain/vent holes in the bottom of the doors.

That's why I was thinking of trying to fit them on the panel side of the protective plastci sheet. Otherwise, is there anything bad about encasing the unit in plastic (sealing it in a plastic bag for instance) before fixing?

Iain.

From my experience, condensation builds up in sealed polythene bags so I'd advise you not to do that.

I finally put together some info on fitting the infinity's into MY01+

There's a major frig to get the X-Overs in - ICE guy's will freak when they see it - but it works for me - the end justifies the means etc...!

Cheers

Drain holes are frequently blocked by well meaning, but stupid, dealers with gunk / underseal etc.
