Default Setting gains on amp using a voltmeter!

Hi guys, so I'm trying to set my gains for my mids on my amp using a voltmeter. Watched loadsa YouTube vids and read the relevant pages online, set everything up as should be but every time i start turning the gain up the voltmeter isn't reading anything at all! Tried all the settings on the voltmeter just in case... any ideas???

Are you supplying your H/U with a 1000Hz test tone for the mids from a phone or other source??
