Default Oil leak on new build.

Ok started the car up for the first time yesterday and found an oil leak. Light wasn't great so I topped it up today and had a look. At first glance it looked to be coming from the top of the bell housing, and thought maybe the crank seal was pushed back too far. But then surely that would leak from underneath, not the top.
After a bit of research maybe it could be the oil drain pipe on the TD04?.

Could be the drain pipe indeed or else the oil separator plate. Very common place to leak. It's inside the bell housing and covers a fair area too. Mine is currently leaking

It's on the right hand side of the crank shaft.

It's a brand new oil separator cover so can't see it's that. Besides it's coming from the top l/h side of the bell housing I would have thought the separator cover and rear seal would leak through the bottom.

There's another plate that's smaller on the left too, if it's coming out under pressure there's a chance it's getting on to the back of the flywheel and flinging off around the housing.

Maybe it is the crank seal and also doing the same thing?

Yeah possibly. I cranked it over without the crank sensor on again about 4 times and no leak. Then started it up and it was then dripping. I did faff about a fair bit with the clutch/flywheel and checking the rear oil seal's positioning did slip my mind.
Unfortunately it looks like I'll be pulling the engine back out.

Not good mate, I gotta do it too. My engine only had 400 miles on it when I bought the car. It's leaking pretty bad too. Engine out!

The plot thickens. I've just been out with a torch and checked the oil temperature and pressure device I fitted and its a little oily....
There's oil in the recesses around it as well and its sitting just below where I thought it was coming from on the bell housing.

I had the same issue with an aftermarket temp sensor. I had over tightened the gauge sender into my brass fitting - at least it's easier to get at than anything behind the flywheel

When I took mine out to update the sensor I found most of the thread came out with it - not sure if it was previously damaged, overtightened or just heat stressed but this is my current fix
