Just rebuilt engine and wondering if driving at 3500 rpm for long motorway journey is too much ? Cos that is 70mph for my type r ?
And info would be great ! Cheers

I would mix the speed so you don't sit at one rev for long time. Mixed driving is what you need

Id recommend engine use up to 4000 rpm with periods of boost to bed the rings in.
I'd mix speeds and not keep it at a constant rpm for mile after mile if I'm honest.

You will get many conflicting views on how to run it in, just be sensible and conservative, don't go anywhere near the redline and keep a check on the right foot with regards to boost an you won't go far wrong, I wouldn't drive it at a constant 70mph tho, go for a smooth drive through the twisties and quieter roads, better than siting on a motorway at a constant speed IMO

One of our top mappers doesn't believe in the running-in process, and reckons 25 miles is enough to make sure everything works and then just drive it normally. And race cars certainly aren't run in for 1,000 miles!

If the engines built properly with correct tolerances it shouldn't go bang if you floor it, after all they don't run race cars in.
but the correct way to run our cars in if you want long engine life and you don't want an oil burner is, Keep the engine flexible and vary the revs up-to about 4000rpm for the first 500 miles then increase to 4500-6000rpm over the next 1000 miles. Don't drive off boost especially if you have forged pistons with hard rings . I was told by my engine builder on my 2.5 to give it 0.5 bar regularly to help bed the rings in. I had a running in map installed on mine which only allowed about 0.5 bar of boost. This map also put the engine under some load to help bed it in. If you run it in off boost driving like miss daisy you run the risk of your engine turning out being an oil burner.

Running in has lots of different view points but the map needs suit the setup regardless.

Running in at below 3500rpm on a different compression, different cc, different mods than it was mapped for will kill it slowly. Taking it on boost would kill it quickly.

Also its very easy to miss a tiny thing like a vac hose and damage it after all that work. So health check or running in map would be my advise.

If you chose to run it in then sitting on the motorway at a constant speed is deffo not advisable

you will need to load the engine to bed the rings in.

if you do 1000 miles at 2krpm then you wont and it will use oil.

fyi i had a mondeo titanium x press car a few years back, it got delivere with 7 miles on the clock....

i ran it in on the way home at 140 lol. got home and found it had 6 gears while looking for reverse
