Default Starting/ idling help please

Hi I've got a Subaru legacy 2008, 2l diesel

Starting her from cold, slow to fire with your foot flat on the gas, same if hot.
Some smoke a bit if cold.
At idle engine note drops with rev counter but picks up again, doesn't stall.
Vehicle was laid up for while.

Any ideas?

Faulty glow plugs would give you poor cold start and excessive smoke.

Slow cranking as in battery/starter motor when hot and cold ? or just takes longer to fire up when cranking ?
Might be worth taking it to a main dealer for a diagnostic check to see whats going on.

Crank speed seems ok, but gust takes longer then it should to fire. No difference between hot or cold.

Diagnostic check probably the best way forward, particuly for the rough and inconsistent idling. Am I right in thinking that faulty glow plugs wouldn't affect a hot engin?

Thanks Anthony
