Default NOISE WHEN BRAKING

hi,

My WRX blobeye has been stood in garage with hand brake up for about 7 weeks . prior to this I had front new discs and pads fitted, I must have done about 200 miles on them before I parked it up in the garage before I went abroad.

I came back to a dead battery, which has been charged up and is now fine.

However, when I am driving, there is no noise, but whenever I brake I hear this clunk noise comning from the drivers side front wheel. I have inspected it from outside, the spring clip that holds the pads is in place, there is no pad and disc movememt upon touching with hand, but when ever I depress the brake pedal, I get a clunk noise, not a squeal, just a clunk kind of sound. any idea's what this can be.

You mean caliper pins ? where can this be purchased from ?

its a metallic clunk sound, when braking at low speed, one clunck for every brake depression, not continous. appears to be coming from drivers front side.

a freind said, may need some copper slip grease applying to the pad ?
also try tightening axle nuts.

Is the spring clip actually in the correct way? If not it pushes pads down and when the brake is pressed the contact with the disk pushes them back up with a clunk.

Otherwise it could be things like tie-rod ends, where braking instead of accelerating changes between tension/compression and any give in the tie-rod ends give a clunk.

Hi,

right, finally got to bottom of this metallic clunk rattle noise problem.

Upon inspection, there is brake pad movement against the disc, as the Kevlar pads supplied by Godspeed Brakes, did not come with the double sided sticky pad, therefore there is movement and the noise is heard upon braking at low speed, like when coming to a stop, so to speak.

So does anybody have a solution to this other than buy a set of pads that come with the sticky adhesive pad. I previously had EBC red Stuff and that came with the double sided sticky pad, so did not have any issues then, but the wear rate on them was very poor indeed. didn't cover to many miles on them.

will tightening the spring clip help, I am not sure if this will cure the problem, as the movement is side to side against the face of the disc not up and down??

Any idea's ??

not resolved, had to live with it or get a brand new set of EBC Red Stuff that come with the sticky pads, to stop pad movement.

EBC red stuff were on the car before but thought save some money, when I upgraded the front discs, I bought a disc and brake pad package from Ian at Godspeed, the pads were kevlar, German Brand, but at least I know for next time, will use EBC.

If you're running standard pads and discs you should have had metal shims that sit behind each pad that, when copper slipped properly, stop squealing and other noises.
If you didn't I'm sure a breaker can sort you a couple of pairs out.
The EBC pads have the padding on the back but personally I've found it's sh*te and I'd rather have shims any day myself as they don't fall apart or degrade in the way that material does.

its only some of the EBC pads that come with the sticky backing , you can buy the sticky pads and cut them to shape to fit , no point in going for an inferior brake pad just because they have a sticky pad on the back of them !

If you can't find the sticky pads to fit , ebay should have them , get a tube of ceratech paste and apply that to the backs of the pads , we have this is you can find it.

It will also help bending the spring plate that locates on the pins holding the pads tight , if this has slackened off , which they do in time , it doesn't give enough tension on the pads holding them in place , take them out and bend them so they are a tighter fit holding the pads firmer

Hope this helps

Cheers Ian
