Default strange problem.. Rev's

Hi all,

I've done a search but could not find my problem anywhere. This is not easy to describe so bear with me. Every now and then my car sort of over rev's from about 2 to 3 or 4rpm it just spikes up 1000rpm without actually increasing speed? Sort of like the clutch is sticking for a split second. Car is a 2002 bug wrx. Has anyone else encountered this? Or can anyone point me in the right direction to help diagnose this? Any help appreciated.

does the engine actually increase in rpm, or just the rev counter fluctuating?

is it clutch slip?

Thanks for the reply. Yes the engine increases rpm. Also i have only ever noticed it in 3rd or 4th gear. Whether that has any relevance or not? It's not a frequent problem, It's probably only happened 4 times in the last 3 months.

Sounds like clutch slip then mate, especially in the higher gears when under load.
i take it this only happens under acceleration, or during fast gear changes??

try driving along in 3rd or 4th at around 30mph and putting your foot down.

Oh bugger. Was hoping for something less costly. Yes it only happens under load in 3rd or 4th intermittently. I take it this is the early stages of clutch failure then?

Is clutch slip the only thing this can be? If it is, is this a suitable replacement?

I've seen people saying that 3 hours labour is about right for a new clutch. Anybody agree with this?

no the engine doesnt have to come out, i have down 2 on hawk eye and about 10 on a classic. i def isnt the nicest job to do!! the 6 speed box is bigger and more awkward. and subaru boxes are bloody heavy too!!

i have done a few and i would struggle to do it on axle stands in 3 hours!!

Cheers for the reply v1wrc. I will tell that to the garage i use. So hopefully 4 hours labour on a ramp is realistic.

Wink

Yeah 4 hours is fine, make sure they undo the 10mm Allen key holding the release bearing fork! If you don't it's quite a struggle, some people don't realise on the first one they do.....!!! :-/

Not sure how far you are from scooby bits but they are one of the best Subaru specialist I know, they are in corwall
