Default Noisy & sluggish

Its not a happy bunny!

It has been smoking well for a few weeks - I put it down to not been driven recently and also the cold etc.

now today its sounds like a lawnmower... sounds normal when idling but when accelerating its terrible. - Feels like its struggling a bit too.

Theres no lights on the dash

Anyone got any ideas please

Thanks

Might help if your post was more descriptive.

What colour is the smoke?
I'm guessing its the hatch in your avitar, do they not have coil packs not a coil and HT leads?

Sorry! im not great with technical stuff.......

Ok its a 2009 wrx hatch.

Smoke is white. it blows when idling and when accelerating.

As for coil packs... i havent a clue.... I lifted the bonnet and checked i couldn't see anything sticking out, like the end of a wire or pipe... All seemed good.

Its only when accelerating. it deffo wasn't there before. The car is usually quiet and u occasionally hear a whistling when going faster..... But with the noise its making at the min u can't even hear that.

Its not like an exhaust noise or a rattle... More like the noise an electric car makes and it just feels like it doesn't want to go. Yesterday i felt like i was forcing it to do 40!

Sorry its vague :-( lol i might be better just goin to get it looked at cause i have no idea what im looking at. i was just trying to save a bit of money (Im a cheapskate!!)

I've still got this problem - have booked it in to Subaru

But if anyone has got any ideas before I go........

Its constantly blowing white smoke now.
The noise is louder - its sounds like your at 5k revs and need to change gear - you look down at the rev counter and its only at 2k

Thanks
:-)

If its constant white smoke then money would be on headgaskets imo anything white out of the exhaust normally indicates water being burnt off ( bit like a kettle on boil with steam ) keep A close eye on the water as it may not just disappear as alot of people think, either that or your exhaust Is retaining water from jet washing or something similar that is being burnt off, but seeing it is a 2.5 engine maybe prepare yourself for a headgasket failure

Thanks for your replies.

Am going to be gutted if it is the head gaskett .... I only drive it at weekends... Had it for nearly a year and only done about 3k miles.

I haven't washed it fir a while so can't put it down to jet wash.

I had the mid section if the exhaust changed about 3 months ago as there was a hole in the join. it was done by subaru do cant imagine that would cause it.

Have just taken a very slow drive to subaru carstins and dropped it off. (longest drive of my life...lol)

Fingers crossed for some good news.

Fingers crossed for you, really hope I am wrong and its something trivial, on the plus side your still covered by warranty for any unexpected repair costs that they should take care of, if they try to get out of it and fob you off play holy hell with them, you won't get very far if your seen as a push over

Thanks David... Will be back to see u if they don't cover on the warranty. very happy with your service and prices last time :-)

My warranty runs out on 23 April so am cutting this fine if we can't find the issue!!

They have said the cant find anything wrong with the engine. they can hear the noise and see the smoke but haven't experienced loss of power.

They think it could be a wheel bearing! ....... Now i may be female but i am positive the noise is not a bearing.

They have told me my warranty is void because i didn't have it serviced by them.... However they did say as a good will thing they would still try and put a claim through and change the bearing.

Im due to pick it up tomorrow but will be test driving first and it will be staying there if the noise is still there.... And i will be arguing the warranty.

If it is the bearing..... Happy days.... But it just doesn't match up to the issues its got.

Keep me in the loop luv, Good Ole Subaru any way out thy can.......

I think that European law means that you should suffer no loss of warranty or service by having the car serviced or repaired by the likes of us - whether in warranty or out of.

Why not pop along at some time and we'll cast an eye / ear over it and see if we can shed any extra light.
Good luck, don't take no for an answer............

As you say David regarding EU law I think as long as its been serviced to the manufacturers specification and used genuine parts (by a specialist/ independent) then the warranty shouldn't be void (I think)

Regardless of cutting it fine your still in warranty so dig those high heels in and play **** with them, when you go to collect it ask what tests they have ran an if they have done a sniff test / hydrocarbon test, as said above if its white its normally water being burnt in amoungst the exhaust gases which is why you get a noticeable white puff out the exhaust, and if they say yes to he hydrocarbon teat just explain that your going to get a second opinion and any charges your going to be holding them liable for, and as David has already said you can get your car serviced at any garage that is vat registered under warranty just like we do with our cars, the only ones that go back to dealer is my parents jags as they are still covered for servicing foc in amoungst the deal we had, other than that all the other cars are serviced at independent garages and have never had an issue with warranty, so if they give you that old chestnut tell them to google it ( not that they should need to )

Anything for a way out

Thanks again for the replies and help :-) I am printing the thread and highlighting technical terms - lol... I can stand my ground no problems - just need the jargon to go with it! lol

The diagnoses from them is....
whirling noise/over reving noise - this is a front wheel bearing and the reason I think its coming from the engine is cause its on the front of the car

White smoke - this is apparantly from the salt on the roads and it being cold.

loss of power/cant get over 40mph without feeling like your killing it (the most obvious symptom) - they havent expierenced this.

I agree with you on the warranty - its still covered - I have found the statement in my subaru book that says geniune parts/specialist etc........and they have known all along I had it serviced elsewhere as when it was serviced we found a hole in the mid section - and I took it back to subaru (after the service)and made them do it under warranty. - and funnily enough they did that repair no questions asked, or anything mentioned that it was serviced elsewhere.

When I dropped it off they made a point of saying ...' ooo your lucky - your warranty is nearly out' ... I cant help but think they have done a quick fix on something - fobbing me off with a wheel bearing and then next month when maybe my engine goes bang - they say - sorry love - warrantys out.

Lets see what tomorrow brings

Just as you said, so long as its serviced using genuine parts then its all fine.

To be honest, the sooner that shower I.M go bust the better.
Their customer service of recent years is absolutely shocking.

I agree - customer service is poor... In fact the whole attitude is bad. they make u feel like they are doing u a favour by speaking to u.

They have changed the wheel bearing on the warranty so im thankful for that.

They have said the hydrocarbon test was fine (I've asked for a copy)

am going to collect it shortly and see how it is and then will just have to keep am eye on it. if its still the same as when i dropped it off....its staying there lol.
