Default 98 wrx boost problems

Hi

Im having boost problems with my 98 wrx saloon. Its down on power and showing a max of 5psi on the boost gauge which drops repeatedly to zero through the rev range.

I have been told that it could be a faulty actuator spring but i cant seem to find out the exact specs for my car to order any parts.

The Car made 281bhp a month ago so is around standard power.

Does anyone know what turbo my car has and the standard boost pressure it should run. Car is standard and is a GC8E with an EJ20K.

Any help would be great.

Brian

If you made 281 and its standard, then it's not a wrx, it's an sti I believe.

Someone correct me

From the little info i can find the 98my wrx was 276bhp as standard but i am struggling to find the correct info because the majority of info is based on the STI.

The turbo says IHI on it but the rest of the info appears to have corroded away.

Please take a look at this video of my turbo and tell me if i should be able to move the actuator arm as easily as this.

If not then is the actuator spring knackered?

After closer inspection it appears to be an IHI VF22.

If the actuator is at fault then can anyone point me in the right direction of a suitable replacement?

This issue is getting worse and yesterday it let me down when it spluttered to a stop.

u can adjust the actuator arm ( id use a reliable boost gauge cause u dont want things to go pop)

if im right the harder the arm is too move then yr holding the boost back more...

in one of those ive put on here it goes into more detail for you about the actuator arm mate..

if yr not certain tho....dont mess

@ tattoosi i have seen videos about setting the pre load of the actuator arm but that one had a threaded end which allowed the arm to be lengthened/shortened. mine doesnt appear to be adjustable.

The actuator arm is quite easy to move (as shown in the video) which suggests to me that the spring maybe faulty

Does anyone know any mobile subaru specialists/tuners in the Yorkshire area that i could call or are there any members on here that are mobile tuners?

After doing the cheap option and cleaning out the boost control solenoid which was definatly blocked i saw 14psi on the boost gauge and it is now boosting very well. Only now it has developed a missfire and is jerking and backfiring. I suspect spark plugs and/or leads so they are next.

I will update when i fit them.
