its a speedo cable, it comes in two parts, - gearbox end which is a screw in part (mine was a nightmare to get out, was plastic and brittle) and then a long cable with a small square head one end and a socket the other. best bet is to take your dash/speedo clocks out and see while moving if you can see the cable moving/spinging, if so then its the clocks/convertor thats faulty, if not best to get a whole new cable? i paid £50 for a new one off ebay... hope my jibber jabber helps?
What he said^^^
They gearbox end can get brittle and the bit holding it in place breaks away. It needs a replacement cable.
The speedo end can come loose if the clocks have ever been out: Take the clocks out again, and reseat it, ensuring it has clicked into place.

How does the speedo cable connect to the one on the gear box as I pushed it in and it worked for couple if seconds then stopped.
Is it the part fixed to the gear box that breaks?
Or the main cable?

Neither, it usually comes loose due to a crack in the bit that holds it to the gearbox.
I'm not sure on Scoobs, since mine has an electronic speedo (98 car), but speedo cables usually have plastic bits that attach to the gearbox/speedo head.
They can get brittle, and a crack in them means they no longer hold tight.
