Default Unbranded Tube & Fin Intercoolers

What are peoples opinions on these type of Intercoolers for sale on ebay etc. They are sold by well established traders such as Toyo Sports. They are well priced and the main thing is they are Tube & Fin design, not Bar & Plate as most other ebay Subaru intercoolers tend to be. The dimensions seem good with a 3" inlet/outlet & supposedly only 45psi pressure drop. For track use, running upto 450bhp its got to be an improvment over a std STi Ver9 topmount?

Opinions?

I suppose my main point is that: Surely an unbranded Tube & Fin intercooler has to be better than the other Chinese Bar & Plate FMIC's that everyone seems to be fitting these days. (So my comparison is not really with £600> Hyperflow / APS / RS500 / HKS / Forge / etc intercoolers, they are obviously much better).

Im currently running 345bhp and might one day upgrade turbo to a max 450bhp, at these power levels I think this might be good value for money and would perform better on track than a std topmount? (Assuming there are no leaks in the core etc)

Harvey tested lots of intercoolers for flow rates, pressure drop etc and wouldn't stock ANY except Hybrid.

Says it all for me.

I suppose its especially on threads such as these, where the Scoobynet community has lost a great mind, that was Harvey Smith...

Hi Ricky,

That core size on your first post would ordinarily be too big for your V9.

You will be needing custom pipework which will obviously add to the costs.

Our ones use a smaller core for your model:

You could give the ebay one a punt, but just because it of tube and fin construction does not automatically make it a good. There are some terrible coolers out there and at £85 it is right down there at the lowest end of the market in terms of price.

Hi Ricky

We are run Japspeed core at 490bhp without the problem,I've logs from drag runs and track days plus from fast road driving and performed well at this level

About the ACT,on our one we are seen maximum 38C(outside temp has been 20-25C) on the drag strip(Santa pod) after 10-15 drag runs, around 28C when we are normal driving motorway and B-roadsIoutside temp has been 25-28C),33C on track days(outside temp 20-25C)

But when we are stuck at queue on Santa Pod we are seen high as ACT 40C(outside temp has been 30-35C)

About the Toyo Sports, somewhere is thread about the headers which has mapped Duncan with horrific results(with those ToyoSports headers car has made 90bhp less!!! like with standard OE headers)

As I said we are run Japspeed FMIC Core and we are been happy,we are run like on the track or track and has been OK

Second option is go with Airtec RS500 core which cost around £280-£300 and made custom pipework which should be no problem,if you are need to make pipework speak to the Gary@G-R Performance or here BigArf

Hope this help

Jura

Thanks for the info Bob. It looks like a great bit of kit and is tube and fin in design.
I have no idea of the quality and design of the core on the cheaper eBay ones which is quite a concern. Do you have any data or test results on your intercoolers?

Jura I would prefer a tube and fin fmic and one that is also good design and quality. The airtec rs500 seems very good but will probably work out more expensive after custom pipework as compared to Aztecs new fmic.

Nothing wrong with eBay intercoolers. Tried & tested, worked fine. Too much BS from people

Should have in the new year. We have a few garages we work closely with and we're just waiting for the right car.

Who are you having do the work to yours? Might be able to sort you a deal of some sort

I was going to try and fit it myself at some stage and then get Duncan to tweak the map.

Ricky depends on your target, yes Airtec RS500 will work out expensive against the eBay FMIC or Aztec

We will be running too on our Hybrid core,we are want before, but when we are enquired before when we are bought Japspeed they're been not available

Many people run the those cheap eBay cores with good results on their cares

You will see how you get on and good luck
