Default remap? octane?

going for remap tomorrow with JGM, 95% of the time i do fill the car with super/momentum etc.

have read about people getting cars mapped for super or unleaded?

whats the deal? basically i'd only ever put in unleaded 95 RON in an emergency like on the mway,

u can map it on 95 but still put super in but not the other way round. ie if mapped on 99 or v-power can not use 95 ron....

Had mine mapped on 99 and to be honest, for the 7 or so bhp difference with 95 its not worth it and a right pain trying to find garages locally that sell 99. Going to get mine remapped on 95 next time!

Map it to the fuel you use.

Why not map it for the 99 you use and keep a bottle of octane booster for emergencies?? Perhaps wouldn't want to do it all the time but would get you out of trouble at least.

Map it on 97 ron, which you can pretty much get anywhere, but put in 99ron when you can so when running the car hard there is no need to worry about early detenation. This is also good for a tracked car as you don't ever need to worry about putting octane booster in the car.

If you map it for 95 you can run it hard on all grades worry free without any det.

Mention this when setting up on your car as depending on the car I may be able to do two maps.

If mapped for 99ron and you cant get it using 95 and driving off boost wont harm it.

Depends on the mods and the car 95 re 99 can make a big or a little power difference.

Also find that 95ron returns less mpg so you nearly get same cost difference.

Just out of interest can dual maps be done on a hawkeye WRX? Currently been open source mapped by Duncan. Didn't think so unless I changed ECU?

Yes. Along with gear dependent boost, launch control, throttle blip and flat shift

Simon, just a thought, is it possible to use Methanol as a octane booster, and if so how does this work in terms of % ?

In the past I have ran allsorts of fuel dependant on the car and map, and when I have used 99Ron with 20% Methanol. I’m guessing I increase the octane to around 106Ron for the 20% mix ?!?!

So if Methanol is around 108.5Ron, then is it not a case that someone could add 4% Methanol to 95Ron to act as an octane booster which should lift the cotane to 99Ron +?

The only reason I ask is because (as already said above) I also struggle for local Shell or Tesco garages, so if this is an option then I may consider keeping a container of say 2 Litres of Methanol in the boot that can be used if I become Vpowerless. 2 Litres of Methanol to 48 Litres of 95Ron should work out at 99+Ron ?!??!

Bloody hell I’m loosing myself…!

This may also help the OP.....

Rob

I was told it would be likely a 25% reduction in bhp

Shows 14 bhp better with Optimax, (not V-Power), in 235, so around 6%.

Yet I was told by someone I would believe, that to run my 2.5 forged engine on 95 would see it's power down by 25%.

They didn’t map the engine to each fuel on the Subaru before each run, so not optimised for each. You may find the difference will be much less than that. That’s what I was told by Martyn @ Enginetuner when we were last talking about this. He suggested we might see 7bhp-ish drop.

NF Race Formula is considered a good octane booster, a lot of the others are not particularly good at increasing octane.

Interesting website http://www.fueltechexperts.com/2008/...which-is-best/

NF Race Formula available from importcarparts.co.uk

PS. I'm not on comission

I watched a program the other day which compared octane boosters and the one thing they all had in common was that they reduced octane by 2%.....
