Default advice /help for " project 400"

hello all , looking for any advice and help out there .

i currently have an my02 JDM bug sti prodrive style

she is currently running 300/310 with the following mods

ecutek @ 1.4 bar
walbro fuel pump
3' turbo back de-cat
apexi induction kit
and a blitz dump valve

i have collected the following parts for " project 400"

sc46 billet - clinic
650 injectors - power enterprise
gt spec headers , heatwrapped - harvey
trick up-pipe , heatwrapped -harvey
FMIC - japspeed
3 port , MAC - harvey
fpr - clinic
turbo inlet pipe - clinic
oil catch can - hyperflow

now here is my quim , the engine has 150 km's on it and i only want to do this the once ,so should i get a health check to make sure all is ok inside before "goin for it" .if yes , what does the health check consist of and what results/price should i be expect .i have had advice of getting a new block, selling myne to a wrx owner as a upgrade and forging the new one, but i feel that may be overkill for my needs as i dont plan on being any more power hungry one this is done . (400) and i believe jdm internals should be up to it .

opinions on the choosen fmic compared to standard tmic would also be welcome ?

so should i go forged and do a proper build or jus strap the lot in ,map and be happy with results ??

for mapping im probably gonna stick with an ecutek tweak as simtek/syvecs great as they are are a little pricey imo .

im sure il have more q's but any advice welcome and thanks in advance .

Hi there

With your mentioned parts you should be making more than 400bhp,as you are said health check should be best bet before putting the all parts on your car(you don't want end with thread why i was just make with this setup 360bhp+).

About the health check,AFR,compression check and det check should be enough.

Your engine should be OK at this level and still think your engine should be OK at 450bhp+,just depends how has been treated and mainly how been maintained.

Forging at this level,i would say, don't needed,if you want go for bigger power i would suggest, but for now, save money.

I would suggest bigger filter as yours,RCM induction kit should be best bet,pus with OE ECU you will be limited with amount of the boost,if you want run more boost, best suggestion and bet is Apexi AVC-R,which is best boost controller(i think Ryan@Prodriverules selling the Apexi AVC-R for £250)

I suspect you should budget for a new clutch before long too ...

@ d4 , standard jdm 6 speed !

@ shaks , thanks , and i know ive enough to get there , im jus more concerned about engine/age , trying to extuinguish the possiblity of failure .

@ jura , cheers , afr = air flow ratio yeah ?? , acompinied with compression and det check . should this be enough.? was kind of thinking with turbo and supporting mods , i can possibly achieve my goal with 1.4 bar boost on ecutek . would rcm trumpet be necessary upgrade over apexi induction with possibility of cld air feed . i thought apexi's were more for classics <99 with the reestriction of ecu mapability .

@t20 , current oe clutch only has 25 km on it . will see how long it lasts as im no dogger on it .

what im really asking i suppose is what are the parameters for a health check (min /max readings) and what is advisable if it fails its examination . routes to take ,possible cost of new engine or what parts could be saved .

by no means am i a mechnic and struggle to understand the under bonnet goin-ons, hence the quest for advice from the more knowledgeable on here .

Stroke it, lol.
Whilst your engine is more than capable of the level of performance you are asking from it, with the amount of mileage it's covered I'd be rebuilding it before giving it a kicking.
A 2.1 stroker will give you a fair bit more torque and make it very nice through the midrange.
If you want costings on a drive in drive out package feel free to give us a call or drop me a PM.

I tend to agree with the above.

If Plymouth is too far, there are others who can do the work.

Hi there

As i said, this health check(AFR,compression, det check) will carried any Subaru Specialist in your area, really depends on your location. And about the min/max readings, your Subaru specialist if its good,he will tell you what he thinks and mainly if you will have results, just post here and i'm sure people will tell you if they're all right or are bad

Yes with SC46 you can achieve more than 400bhp@1.4bar,you should be making around 410-430bhp just on V-power with this sort of boost.

Apexi induction kit is smaller and can be your main restriction at this level,i would go everytime with RCM induction kit, they're proven

Apexi AVC-R are best boost controllers and mainly are used when you can't "safely" control boost over 1.5-1.6bar on OE ECU,plus this will give you two boost levels(low and boost map),which is probably available too on your JDM OE ECU via EcuTek.

With your supporting mods you should be making this your suggested power and in my view little bit more above your target

New age JDM STi engine are usually strongest engines from Subaru and they will take 400bhp+
