Hi All
Just after a bit of help :
My father has had his 01 since June and has been very happy with it. However, a week or so ago he had massive 'pinking' (his words) and the check engine light came on. This was just during normal driving through town. He limped home and phoned the garage. They asked to see the car ... he went out started it (all fine) and drove very carefully to the garage. They reset the ECU and said it was dodgey fuel (he had put 95 in a couple of tanks previously). He was told to use max throttle within the next 10 miles ... 'to get the car to run properly'. He did this and all was well. Unfortunately, a day or so later the syptomns returned ....back to the garage (on a recovery lorry) .... They then diagnosed a problem with the tumble valve generator (????) ... then carried out a series of checks to find this fault. Then believing they'd sorted the problem (linked to a faulty plug) contacted my father.
... Dad goes out to the car .... Check Engine light stays on ... engineer comes over and then diagnoses a faulty tumble valve.
Problem is, it is proving to be very difficult to get hold of !
... allegedly none in the UK or in Japan !!
Anyone else had a similar problem ? or have a spare tumble valve ??
... the really ironic thing is that he ran a MY95 WRX for >2 years without a single problem !!!!
Cheers

Sorry to hear that mate.... thats the price we pay isnt it!!!
Hope it gets sorted... the dealers always use you as a test bed dont they - quick fix and wait to see if you come back rather than check properly!!

The tumble valve generator is only supposed to be in use for the warm up cycle, and should be fully open at all other times. Closing i - particularly on just one bank - will cause detonation, so your Dad's diagnosis was correct.
Question has to be why SUK doesn't have the parts? Has there been a duff batch (cam sensors anyone?)?

Hi Adam,
Try calling Grade A Subaru as they were breaking a MY01 when I was out there last week. They may be able to sort you out with a part until the dealer gets one in.
I'd lend your dad mine, but I suspect my engine would complain without it
BTW, are your lot still copyrighting all my DNA ?
