Default Low tyre profile, good or bad.

I'm currently running 18" wheels with a 35 profile, but eventually i will be running 40 profile as i want to try it out, and think 35 might just be too little. This is based on my opinion that there is very little wall and i would imagine it's better to have a little give in the wall?

Low profile wall, bad? Too much wall, bad? What's ideal for an "18 wheel? What do you think?

Thanks

It depends a lot on whether you want a car with good road manners, drives and handles well or one that looks da bomb to the 13 y/old's outside Macdonalds/ Also what width tyre are we talking about?

I used to run 215/35/zr18 on my classic i was going through 2 sets of tyres a year with the pot holes in Bucks when i finally got rid of the wheels i took the wheels off and found that one wheel looked ok on the outside but had 3 very lrg bulges on the inside i have moved to 17's the best move in my opinion...

They are 18 x 7.5 wheels with 215/35/18 tyres, i am looking to get 18 x 8 with 225/40/18.
I've been running 35 profile for over a year, i think i would just like to try a bigger profile as i feel i may benefit in terms of handling, but i have no proof of this?

Thanks

I agree with Zohan, i have tried 17s and 18s on different profile tires on my classic, low profile makes the car look very nice but very harsh, i have opted now on 16s with 205/50/16 and the ride and handling is so much better then other but not everyones cup of tea.

Gone for 235-40/18 on 7.5 x 18 rims. Rides well over the cart tracks that Leeds city council call roads.

LOL this makes me laugh as people spend sooooo much on alloys, which is a complete waste.

Subaru spent a fortune in R&D but joe bloggs knows best.

I agree with you mate 16's are best on a classic. The End.

I agree with that, on public roads.

I should have mentioned this is for track purposes lol.

Thanks

On a classic the right size (most like the stock circumference, and without the least chance of rubbing) is 215/35/18.
I would rather go to a 17" wheel on a classic then fit higher profile tyres to the 18's on there now.(expensive, speedometer inaccuracy, possible rubbing issues etc)

I had Speedline 16s on my classic and went to 17 OZ Ultraleggeras. Hand on heart, the latter was an improvement in EVERY respect. Upgrading to cheap alloys is usually a bad idea, as they are often heavier than the OEM items (which are a compromise remember - Subaru UK don't put the best items on the car, just the ones they consider most cost effective). Heavy alloys increase unsprung weight and detract from ride and turn in.

The trick is not to go too big with the wheels and maintain the rolling circumference of the tyres (no silly low profiles).

17s optimal on a classic I think I had 215/40/17
18s on a new age. 225/40/18

I believe this is what prodrive suggest too.

35 profile too low IMHO

Before my Classic i had warm/hot hatches all on lowered suspension and all with really hard rides so for me personally the 215/35-18 felt great and i would not think twice about it again. Totally agree however about pot holes - avoid at all costs
