Do I really need a Sports Cat?
I'm looking at putting a few basic mods on my 2005 STI.
Panel Filter
High Flow Fuel Pump
So is it really necessary to put in a Sports CAT to achieve around 300 bhp at remap time. Is it a must to have this fitted in order for the turbo to spool up quicker.
Its just that I don't want any MOT emissions failures, especially with the stricter testing regime starting next year.

Next years regime is no stricter in terms of emissions, they are just now physically checking that if a CAT was fitted as OE then one is still fitted.
For an STI a remap alone will likely see more than your target 300bhp, but to maximise the benefits a free-flowing exhaust including sports CAT will lead to a further improvement.

It doesn't require the OE CAT to still be in place, just that A CAT is still in place...

Depends how strict they are as the statement a catalytic converter missing where one was fitted standard could cause issues with 2nd cat delete pipe, prodrive pipe still looks like a cat so most garages won't know difference though. Only time will tell how much effect the new regs will cause, but hopefully common sense will prevail

Correct me if I'm wrong but is this the Prodrive set up. They start with a Sports Cat downpipe mating on to a decat centre pipe and finally have a sports muffler at the end.
Most aftermarket sports cat's have the downpipe and centre decat as one piece.
