Hi,
I bought a forged engine, that has smoked since day 1.
however i have just found out how the guy run it in.
From fresh Build he used Fully Synthetic oil, and was giving it * from day one, 4 wheel drifting after just 150 miles. it has only done 2k now, but it does smoke a fair bit.
I assume this is baceuse he has not alloud the rings to bed ine, by using fully synthetic oil.
Their is no odd noises or rattling from the engine hot or cold.
I am going to take the heads off, as i am fitting ported heads.
I am wondering if i was to use some 1500 snadpaper on the bores and run mineral oil for a bit if this will help to bed the rings in, or will i need to fully deglaze and fit another set of Rings.
The Pistons are Wiesco, if i need to fit new rings where can i get them from for these pistons?
Thanks
Derek

I would strip and measure the bores and pistons and make a decision from there.
If all measures up ok, then a proper de-glaze and new rings would the the right way forward - the rings are specific to the wiseco pistons and you can try Mark@ Lateral Perf. to see if he stocks them.

A fully syn oil would not allow the rings to bed in properly given its protective quality,CRO or competition running in oil should have been used but obviously the high rev attic's from day one wouldn't of helped either.
i have used fully synth on my old forged engine and it run in fine no smoke no probs this time round i did it with minreal then semi then fully, the only reason my old engine went pop was becuase a turd named andy vey map it so lean it was dettting all the time and that was after two years of it dettting

If it is assembled correctly and the map is safe to do so ragging it from day one shouldnt cause and issue. Personnally I prefer to at least do 50odd miles on mineral oil with lots of overrun.
Firstly is the breather systen standard?
I would check the ring gaps and oil control ring.
If built correct I wouldnt expect enough smoke to be noticable even before the rings are bed in.
Wet and dry - no deffo not, a very light hone if clearances allow and new rings would be ideal

I actually built the engine for him, but the block was honed to suit the pistons, and the rings hand gapped for Nitrous, by Barum Engineering in barnstaple.
He never used the nitrous in the end, but i know the gap for NOS is larger than std, so not sure if that would make a difference or not.
As for mapping the car has a Gems ECU, and was mapped by a local tuner, i know he is more use to mapping Cosworths etc, So i think mapping should have been good.
I will see if i can get a new set of rings, and get it very lightly honed out...
another 2000 miles running in.

2000miles is a bit much.
Wasnt critizing the mapping just the driving hard from day 1 on a new engine can be difficult unless map sorted.
What colour is the smoke?
