Default Noise coming from engine bay?

Hiya all

First time poster here... I just bought a Subaru Impreza Classic Sport MY96 and last night there was a strange noise coming from the engine bay which sounded like metal scraping against metal, it wasn’t rhythmic and was hard to pin point where it was coming from from did sound like it was from the front and maybe the right?

I checked the oil and topped this up and had no effect, I used Shell 95 fuel which is similar to the previous owner (checked he didn’t just use 97!)

It sounds like a metal object is loose somewhere and moving around

When the engine is revved from idle the sound and frequency increases which draws me away from something like the Cat breaking up

I am thinking it may be a pulley on the aux belt and may try removing this and seeing if the sounds is still there?

The car is running fine although I don’t feel happy driving it whilst its like this! Earliest I can get to a mechanic is tomorrow night or Wednesday

Anyone have any ideas, suggestions or even had this before?

Thanks

Tapping? Clanking? Bag of spanners? Bottom end gone, not rare, but very expensive.

Constant tapping, but light? Could be crank pulley loose, or it's rubber part perished.

Don't drive it until it's been inspected.

Thanks for the reply

would this not affect the steering in any way?

Is this pump connected via the aux belt, meaning the aux belt removal could stop the sound of this?

The only way I can describe it would be like something metal stuck in a washing machine and scraping around the metal, its not a constant noise but gets worse when revving

I really hope its not bottom end

is it a SCRAPING, rather than a tap/clank?

Maybe one of the bearings on the alternator/power steering pump?

We can't diagnose without seeing it really, best to waity until it's been looked at.

Sorry, me and my partner have been trying to think of the best way to describe it!

It is more of a scraping sound which can get quite high pitched...

Like metal on metal

I will try and post a video/sound clip a little later.... Sorry for the vagueness

Hiya all
My pafrtner has just messaged me whilst I am work and said there is a small leak on the acr and is on the drivers side near the front of the engine
Could someone tell me where the water pump is located?

Is it the left or right of the engine? I am not near the car at the moment!

I found this pic on the net

Could someone point it out on here please?

However I am sure the noise in coming from the right hand side of the alternator... what is this thats attached to the belt?

Thanks!

But that's not a photo of YOUR car, is it?

I thought someone was going to diagnose this for you? As I stated earlier, ANY ideas off here will bve conjecture.
