Default How can you tell which cambelt kit you need?

I am trying to buy a cambelt kit, with tensioners, for my impreza without going to the dealers.

I knwo there are a number of differences in the kits, with different tensioners and idlers, but I dont know which one I need!! The car is a 98 so on the changeover Im told, and having taken off the left and right hand cambelt covers Im none the wiser!!

Engine code is EJ20GNW6ND in a UK 98 car.

All help very much appreciated, as living on a small rock, I need to get all the parts togther before the engine comes out!

Cheers

Grant

Only real difference is the tensioner lay out mate, early ones ie ver 1/2 have a push plunger like this

and later ones have the push rod/spring built into the tensioner body like this

Easiest way then would be to ring the stealers and get it identified 100% and then hangup and get it from somewhere cheaper

You will want the later pivot type tensioner, i don't have the number to hand, but the other idlers are Blueprint ADS77610 or INA 532008420 X 2 these are the large plain idlers, INA 532008520 X 1 thats the toothed idler, i don't think it has the very small idler on the L/H side above the water pump, if it does the number is Blueprint ADS77612 X 1
Cambelt Gates 5384XS, 281 tooth, hope this helps.

Cheers gents- well eventually I got a look at the tensioner using a mirror, and using the link below (if I paste it properly!)to help me locate where I should be looking.

I am none the wiser on idlers unfortunately, but I guess I can order them all, and then send what i dont want back.

Your help was much appreciated- cheers

If your getting the parts together to do the job in one hit, then it would be prudent to order a water pump and gasket as its driven by the cam belt and if its worn/noisy/leaking when you check it - its no big deal to replace it when the cam belt is off.

My car is a 97 Impreza STI Type R.

I'm missing one idler at the moment should i have two of ADS77610?

And the water pump i have, somebody on another forum told me its wrong for my car, do you know if thats right?

Have a look at the following page you can get the pulleys seperate and you can view what comes in the full kit to see what you are missing.
