Default New Subaru Owner - Oil Leak

Hi all

I have just bought a 1995 classic shape Impreza Turbo for cheap - £1000 to be exact and as expected the car isnt that great, so expect to see me around, ALOT! Bodywork is pretty poor and i have an oil leak on the engine.

Being new to Subarus i was hoping someone would be able to help me identify where the leak is coming from and what i need to do to sort it. The leak is coming from the left hand side of the engine bay and is dripping onto some sort of heat tray causing it to burn and smoke. I am hoping it is coming from from some sort of gasket, but thats where i am hoping someone on here can help me out with the identifying where as i have no ideas about this engine at the moment, i need to fix it before i can even consider driving it.

Please see pics below, not the best but its hard to take pics of the exact location, but it is past the filter on the side of the block:

Ah, that's not so bad. Would this type of leak normal cause smoke because of the location? How easy is it to do? Seems alot to strip down?

it drips onto the eaxhaust manifold heat shield below. It could also be the turbo supply /return but most likely rocker gasket as said.

Can anyone advise whats involved? Appears to be alot of stripping down! I am quite handy with the tools, just need some direction.

Also is this the right gasket set for a 2.0 Turbo, Uk car - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUBARU-IMP...item27ba14c0b6

Not hard, no.

But mucky, and you lose oil, so be prepared to top up, have some in stock

Use genuine gasket and plenty of sealant.

Best attacked from underneath

just done mine.

Its any easy enough job, just fiddly.

remove everything that side,airbox/induction kit/brackets etc to give as much room.

i used a 1/4" ratchet as a 10mm spanner was rounding the bolts, but he last bolt, generally where it leaks from, just above the up-pipe is the hardest bolt i found, again, some use a 10mm spanner,i couldnt,so had to cut in half a 1/4" 10mm socket and just about got it on to undo the bolt.

i did mine from standing under bonnet, found the subframe got in the way from underneath

as said, use a good sealant and genuine gasket, not a job that wants to be done again the next weekend.

with the extra work of cuting the socket,it took me,chillin, a couple of hrs,i was cleaning bits at the same time tho

Hi all

I need some more help regarding my oil leak. I done the rocker cover gasket on the left hand side as your looking at the engine but i still get smoke once the engine has heated up, still coming from around the same area. The gasket may have not sealed i guess, but is there anything else at all that could leak causing it to smoke in that area?

Thanks

David

I thought that, but with the amount of smoke i am still getting its not possible i dont think.

Camshaft oil seals?
Are these easy to do as well?

Oh, would it help if i said it seems to smoke more when driven harder, so seems like there is more oil. Is there anything around that area that is pressurised?

scoobyclinic did mine as i never had time to do it myself. they said the car would have to be left there overnight for the gasket to set properly.

We always leave the sealer to cure over night just to be sure it's set then top up the oil and run up to temp checking for leaks in the morning.

Hope this helps
