Default Injecting Methanol

Just wondered if anyone has tried the above using a water injection type system? Weve been playing with direct petrol mixes with good results but wondering if the gains by injecting are comparable?

I've got an aquamist water / methanol injection system from a 12 litre Spec C tank in the boot. Comes in at 1.0 bar with a rising rate. Neatly mapped by Bob Rawle

Good points.......you don't have to add methanol at the petrol station and it's only used on boost.

Bad points.........shockingly expensive for the BHP gain LOL

Are you injecting straight meth or mixed with water? Do you know what the gains are? Running 20% meth/petrol mix we see about + 10% bhp/ftlbs

50/50 methanol and water in the tank injected into the FMIC pipework just upstream of the TB..... BHP gain was from 370 ish to 403 BHP and enough torque to smash two 5 speed bug WRX gearboxes in as many months meaning a trip to API for a 6 speed jap box LOL.

Good for pub talk but Would I do it again? nope. I'd just go out and buy a better turbo or stick some methanol in the tank ....

Do you know what size injector you are using?

When injecting water into the charge before the throttle body the methanol has little effect, it is primarily in there as an antifreeze. the real benefits from water injection are the heat absorbsion qualitys of the water itself, straight water is best for this. It allows more timing and leaner mixtures to be run-more power. not to mention decreasing ACT's so more air is inducted per given boost pressure.
Water injection in short is like having a very effective intercooler
It will also allow lower quailty fuels (normal unleaded) to be used, as it effectivly increases octane arting to around 116 due to its anti det qualitys.

Work it out on here using the calculator http://www.rbracing-rsr.com/waterinjection.html

I am fully aware of using water injection, Ive used it for the past 5 years on my rally car, but was wondering about injecting meth as an octane booster rather than cooling aid. In theory your adding it to the cylinder so should give the same effect as mixing with petrol, in practice these things don't always do what we think.

I see, prehaps the best idea is to make a custom fuel system using a seperate tank, pump, injector and rail and control it with megasquirt? that would give you fully mappable fifth injector for the methanol?

Yeah, Myself and Graham (enginemapper) where discussing this, when added to fuel you get an increase as per the map, with the water injection system it's more crude unless you fit the mappable version, hmmmmmmmmm, something to ponder. Thanks for the input Guys.

Methanol injection into the intake / supercharger system was used very effectively by Mercebes Benz for their aero engines..... MW50 as it was called

im keeping my eye on this closely, looking to use say a 20% mix of meth in the tank in the very near future.....but this might turn out to be far easier than mixing fuels in tank and also better for the pub talk lol.
