Have you checked the fluid?
Does it get louder as you throw it into a roundabout or bend?

If there's a grinding noise it would be worth slackening the belt and turning the pump by hand to see if it feels smooth.

Fluid levels, Belt, Alternator or Power steering pump bearings, in that order.

I had this and it was the downpipe heatsheild beleive it or not, it had come off and was getting stuck. Might not be this in your case but worth checking too. Was causing a rattling noise when steering

Coinsidently just took the heatshield off due to knocking sound whe swutching ignition off. Had to remove the intercooler to do that but knocking is still there. So is whining

They're only lil bolts which snap easy and I found it a ball-ache trying to get the intercooler off because the hose was on too tight so I had to start yanking it 'like a bitch' lol. I'm going to try PS fluid today, hope it works!

Just had this i drained the old fluid and put in new and slightly overfilled it .Noise is gone for the moment.Think the pump is original so the fluids probably 13 years old on mine.

I cracked off one of the nuts on the rack so it was drizzling out then topped up at the top till i had put about 1.5 L in then nipped the rack nut back up .Job done.
