Windscreen - WRX STI Type R
Hi All,
Does anyone have advice/opinions on this?
A crack has appeared in the windscreen to my 1997 WRX STI Type R Japanese import.
The insurance company Admiral sub-contract replacement windscreen work to Auto Windscreens who use non-standard glass on cars over 3 years old.
The non-standard glass is thicker than the genuine Subaru Type R glass and it is not stamped by Subaru. It comes in green, blue or bronze tints. (Doesn't look like the original has a coloured tint though). My excess is £70 so I could get this replacement for £70.
I checked with a main dealer and genuine Subaru glass costs approx. £800 plus fitting. The main dealer has told me that they have to get the part number from Japan apparently!?
Auto Windscreens say that the insurance company may have a ceiling of approx. £500 so I would have to top up the rest if I wanted a genuine windscreen + pay the Excess of £70.
Is it worth going for the genuine glass?? The Type R is a lightweight model so I wonder how much lighter the genuine glass is??
Options are:
1. Pay Excess (£70) and allow Auto Windscreens to fit non-standard glass;
2. Pay difference (£300ish) for Genuine Subaru Type R glass + Excess (£70) and Auto Windscreens would fit this.
3. Find a crashed Type R with a mint windscreen, buy glass, pay Excess (£70) and Auto Windscreens would fit this.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? Any thoughts on this?
Will the thicker glass fit? Does the original glass have a coloured tint?
Is the genuine glass much lighter?Does anyone have advice/opinions on this?

im in the same boat mate, just found an 8"crack in mine since its been in my garage. as far as im aware the ra (which i have) and the r dont have lighter glass, only the bonnet is lite weight as said. ive herd of wings, doors, bootlid and glass being lite weight but havnt come across any as yet
as long as the tints match (brown) you wont have a problem.

Thank you for the replies.
I'll go with the non-standard glass seeing as it is near impossible to get genuine Subaru glass for a non-UK car, fitted at reasonable cost and within a reasonable time scale! lol!
About the weight issue, I thought all the Type R imports have lightweight wings, bonnets, etc as the car is said to weigh around 1250kg ish.
The panels on mine certainly seem quite 'lightweight'.
