Default Pre-facelift bonnet vs post facelift

Chaps.

On the classics does anyone know when they switched over to the facelift front end? Was it done by registration or something else ie will an R reg be pre-facelift with an S being facelift say? Also will the facelift bonnet vents fit the pre-facelift bonnet?

Ta, TX.

I have an '97 R, which is an early facelift, with facelift bonnet, grille and headlights. The rest is pre facelift.

My missus has a full facelift on a 99 S!

Facelift vents or scoops won't fit the pre-facelift bonnet at all.

Have a read of THIS

Minefield alert!

You really can't go on registration letter since cars sold around the time of the change might have P, R, S regs. Just depends what dealers had in stock.

Mine is an S 98 plater, has facelift, better seats, three slot bumper, grey door trims, white-faced instruments with electronic speedo.

A year later and even better seats, darker door trims, crystal lights, two slot bumpers were introduced.

As a rule of thumb.

1998 - Is the cross over year.
(when you get a mixture on pre and post facelift bits on cars)
Pretty well much anything before 1998 is pre facelift
Pretty well much anything after 1998 is facelift

Bumper stayed the same until around 99/00. MY97 was still the early bumper.

Bonnet on the other hand.....

Nope, mine is '97 and is facelift, and yes it did come like that from new!

There are 3 types of facelift if you like;

Early ones, which just have facelift non-crystal headlights, small facelift grille and facelift bonnet. (usually my97-98)

In between facelifts which have the above plus the later style interior,(usually my98)

and full facelifts which have all of the above plus darker interior trim, facelift bumper, crystal headlights/fogs and larger facelift grille! (usually my99-00)

Obviously, as said above, there will be exceptions to this rule due to stock held by dealers etc......

Mine has what looks like mechanical dials, but on removal no speedo cable

I said ““pretty well much““
98 IS the cross over year.

You however have explained it far better than me
