Default DIY EJ20 Rebuild

hello engine builders!

ive brought this ej20 to rebuild for fun. i think its of a pre 96 wrx wagon cos it came with a 90 degree td04 turbo still fitted. However there are signs this engine has been aprt before! Like cam belt and thermo stat missing!

Im looking at the heads and one looks like its different, like its been replaced.
One head has line markings but the other head has no lines and has circles instead. My thought was the one with circles is perhaps off a uk car?

im not too fussed if one has been replaced so long at they will work together ok.

heres some pics of the engine. im hoping the crank is OK and i can get away with new shells only.

oh and look at the third pic. not only did they remove the stat but they stuck a bit of pipe and bung onto the thermostat housing. whats that all about? (you can see it in front of the sump)

thanks scoobyhyp, yes they have removed the oil cooler and the filter now screws straight onto the block. I wonder why the heck they did that. maybe it was leaking or maybe it was part of a botch when it was over heating?

ahhh, this fits together now. the guy i bought it of said it was brought for a "PROJECT"
The first thing i noticed was that the engine loom had been butchered. possibly for the different type of car it went into. This could explain why they needed to remove the oil cooler. Would also explain why 3 of the 4 coilpacks were melted! Botched wiring!

maybe it was leaking ?? you will brob find once the heads are off that the head gasket/s have gone as well not a bad thing normally means you can get away with just re shelling fingers crossed, and getting the heads skimmed. they also remove the water cooler because of height issuse it hangs to low !! the filter that is lol ..

Are you going to strip them down?
as a picture of the markings on the cams and valves is the way to identify
Cheers

yes am going to strip the lot. thanks. will post up pics in due course. got to get me hands on a decent breaker bar and 22mm socket. not looking forward to the 2 x 12 mmm bolts in the water jacket which hold the block halfs together. They look well rusted.

As long as the heads have a single coil pack bolt hole in them ( not 2 as in Legacy ) then the internals should be the same regardless of the difference in external casting marks on them ( provided it hasnt been bodged in the past ).
Would imagine they are Version 1~2 WRX Hydraulic heads and should have inside :
I252 Inlet Valves, E281/2/3 Exhaust Valves.
40mm Red Colour code valve springs.
Hydraulic Lifters.
LH & RH Head Codes.
Carbon Composite Head Gaskets.

Mick

ps - there are 6 crankcase bolts in the water jacket, 2 on the LH side and 4 on the RH side

Teeny bit done tonight after a day in the garden.
Crank pully off, belt off, flywheel off. Sump off (bit of swarf on pick up tube gauze but the bearing dont look like theyve failed. :-)
Started to take heads off but thought id best clean garage up first and create a clean tidy storage area.

Its these buggers that worry me. Are they normally this rusty!? I assume they have to come out to split the block. Are they normal 6 sided 12mm, or wierd multi sided type?
