Default Changing front cover of TD05 16G - how?

Hi guys,

As above, i have a front entry TD05 16G that has a little play in the shaft and i've been offered another top notch one but it is side entry.

How would i change the front housings over and is there anything i should do/know/avoid etc when doing it?

Thanks in advance!

James.

remove the oil drain pipe and water pipes and then relese the huge circlip on the rear of the cover, you may need to catch the clip with a screw driver before it pings off your pliers. when refitting make sure you locating pin lines up with the notch on the cover.

its easy, make sure the grooves are clean on the new cover (groove where the clip goes) and dont brake the wheel when removing and you will be fine.

also have a good look at the turbo, look where the cartridge meets the exhaust housing (where its clamped together) its common for them to crack here, if its cracked its mullerd.

Is it hard to get the lines matched up perfectly when refitting the front cover then? I'm going to have to get the turbo out of the garage in a minute to have a look, lol!

Also... how much play should a completely dry (no oil) 16G have in it? The one i think is dud will move quite a bit from side to side but not in and out. Doesn't touch the sides of the housing but comes very close - hence me thinking of changing it?

that sound like normal play, its when they start touching the sides and smoking there f@@ked. you will be able to see the marks on the inside of the housing if its been catching.

its only a round dowle you need to line up, if you dont line it up the clip wont go on the back of the housing. they usaly just drop right in

Ah, brilliant! I'll get the new one and check the play in that one and if it is better than the current one (which i expect it will be) then i'll change them over. If not then i'll just use the current one - i was told it ran 340bhp anyway before it came off but i'm sure it's fine.

Thanks again for all of your help!
