Had mine done few months ago (02 wrx bug). Got a garage to do it and they said it was a bit awkward to get out but not too bad. They said they had to remove the exhaust, I presume they meant manifolds. Also they did it with the subframe in place, obviously they have the benfit of a ramp! They are a good garage (my old man works there) but by no means specialise in subarus/performance cars.

Thought about doing myself but there was no way I was going to attempt that on the drive else wold have resulted!

from memory

intercooler off
gearbox to bulk head mount off
undertray off
2 engine mounts
jack up via front part off gearbox/bell housing(if you have an engine crank then better but can be done via gearbox)
very small hands to remove back row
prise/pull sump off carefully,

reseal only with threebond 1215 from subaru or ebay

note remember to drain oil first and remove dip stick lol

on the 6 speed pretty sure there is a bracket on top very close to the bulkhead with a little breather pipe connected to it that may have to be removed just keep checking clearance on top as you jack it up ,it dont give you much but can be done, remove back row first as the others are easy.

Have done three times on my car

once in my garage
once on ramps
once on a sloping sodden wet paddock at knockhill

The ramps were easier LOL but it is still a git of a job and probably easier to remove the engine tbh as you need to lift it up a few inches to enable you to get the rear bolt on the sump tray back in straight (you can undo them in situ).

I have a baffled sump i want to fit.

Might sweet talk my mate into lifting the engine up thinking about it, as i have uprated engine mounts that could be fitted at the same time.

perfect time to change them mate, all tho the turbo side engine mount is just as hard to get to as the sump rear bolts lol the 2 bolts where its bolted to the block are near impossible to undue as its that tight lol be sure to post a pic of you blooded knuckles lol

^ This is it... Also, put the plug abck in before poping the sump off or you'll wear the last bit of oil. Don't ask me how I know this

Perfect time to upgrade the mounts since removing the pan is anlmost the exact same install procedure for the mounts

It's not that it's difficult, it just takes some time and patience. If you can remove an intercooler and install a header you can do this. The only tools you really need are small drive, extensions and a swivel drive.

me and a mate done this on his 1996 classic the other weekend and did not jack the engine up just had to remove a few bits from underneath was abit awkward to be honest but the first time we had ever done one and was on his drive in the rain so abit worse but was not that bad As said just the rear bolts really long swivel extension done the trick for us not sure if there alot of difference between classic and beware though
