think ive killed my turbo today, please help!
hi guys
was out driving today and ive suddenly lost all boost from turbo. also get a rattling sound from the engine which starts only when the turbo is meant to kick in. im guessing from the rattling sound that the turbo has had it. is this the case or could it be something less worrying? i have an td05 20g turbo fitted. if the turbo has gone. can u get them rebuilt rather than buying a new one?

This happened to me a few years ago on my old classic. Had recently had a FMIC fitted, and when accelerating to join the dualer, lots all power, black smoke from the exhaust, and sounded like a tractor. In my case it was an intercooler pipe come loose. Might be worth checking your piping etc to rule that out.

In two cases, I had the smoke start about two days AFTER the turbo failed.
AFAIK, turbos are only rebuildable if the compressor and turbine wheel have not touched the housing, with the rattling sound it's likely that they've touched and that one of them will have to be replaced during the rebuild, driving the cost up.
Something more to check, unless you've been overspeeding the turbo (unlikely with a 20G), the most usual cause of turbo death is inadequate oil supply which can be caused by low oil pressure. I hope you're able to check engine oil pressure as well as oil feed to the turbo before installing a new one.

thanx for all the help and advice guys. took it to garage and they said it could be turbo gone or the actuator as im getting now boost at all. ive been still driving the car and had no blue oily smoke from exhaust. ive decided to take the car of the road for this year and am going to repair it myself in spare time and just buy a cheap run about.
looking at where the turbo is situated, looks like i will have to remove the intercooler to get better access. what other things do i need to remove for access. also how easy is it to remove heat shield from around turbo? will be replacing like for like with turbo, but would an actuator with adjustable boost be a good option?
