I could really need some help with this.. When I accelerate something rattles quite alot in the front.. I'm almost sure it's not the engine because when I stand still and rev the engine, there is no rattling sound. It sounds like some metal-panel or something that's loose..

Any idea what this is? Please?

For the record; It's a MY 99.

Thanks in advance!

Question

I have the same problem on my MY01.
Sounds like a light-weight metal(aluminium?) rattling off something. It happens around 1500revs in 2nd and 3000 in 1st.
I'm no techie but i'm guessing its the heat shield.

Anyone.....?

Sounds exactly as the same problem I'm having. Around 1500-2000 rpm in the first gears.. If you mean the heatshield around the turbo i don't have one (I think).. As I have a decatted downpipe the heatshields is located in my basement and not in the car (again I don't know why, they where in the trunk when I bought the car)..

Red face

I thought the Scoob boxer engine was supposed to be smooth, bag of **** at low revs if you ask me...
my MY01 makes the same sound, mainly in high gears low revs 1000-2000rpm. The dealer tried to palm me off with some waffle about variable valve gear blah blah - which it dont have..!

Crap quality control or 'ministry of crap design' strikes again...

</rant off>

As I said before, I don't have the heatshield so that can't be the problem..

i have a heat shield on my manifold..
My rocker cover is leaking slightly and has leaked on th heat shield causing the bolts to come loose, the heatshield is now rattling slightly,
so, although you have no heatshield on your downpipe you should have on your up-pipe/manifold????
Cheers, Rob
if it is not that, then it will probably be your brake pads, but that can be determined by pushing the pedal which will stop the noise...

I'm getting a little confused here.. Both because i'm not really sure about the english terms of parts in the engine or the exhaust but also because i'm no wizard in mechanics.. I'll take a picture and post it here. Would be interessting to know what shield I got and not anyway.. If I only knew someone else with a scooby I could do a comparison ;-)

mash
it is smooth
very smooth..
but... where it counts... in the power band

cant remember exactly.. but someone pointed it out to me once...
something about very good with 1st and 2nd order forces, but not so good with 3rd... or vice versa..
point was... vibrates longitudinaly (spelling) at low revs (<2000).
