Default S reg uk wagon issues

hi there my s reg uk turbo wagon has a few issues but can't help thinking they are linked via one common problem. Firstly the speddo and odometer have stopped working, yet all other guages are working fine. Also as i approach roundabouts the idle drops to 0 and either picks up or cuts out. If it picks up it will be very lumpy and ranges between 200-800rpm. The cel is intermittent so is in and out of limp mode.
Any ideas welcome, i will check fault codes in the morning.

Mike

Just as a precaution check the earth strap to the battery as mine was having trouble starting and throwing up fault codes and all it was down to was a dodgy earth strap that had a crack at the end that bolts to the battery also try a ecu reset by disconecting battery for 30 min then reconnect and go for a spin and see if it throws up any more codes

What model year? S will cover MY98 and MY99 cars.
Easiest way to tell is pop the bonnet, if the coil pack is slap bang in the centre of the inlet manifold then its a phase 1.5 engine and an MY99, off set to the right and its a phase 2 engine MY99.

hi tony it must be a 1.5 as coil pack sits bang in the centre of inlet manifold, Have had ago at cleaning the idle air control valve. it is now idling a bit better but still not 100% do i need to reset the top of the valve as i removed this whilst cleaning. But still have no speedo and after reseting the ecu i am still get getting the 24 flash code. Any ideas?

Was going to try that tomorrow, just trying to find a rough guide of how to remove them. After clean IACV in the pouring rain a nice inside, in the dry job is next on the cards. plus i have a loose speaker connection i want to fix as it is driving me insane

A little update, Idle seems to be alot smoother but does still occasionally drop right down but not cut out. I will try re cleaning the IACV, /what is the best stuff to use as i only used a little spray of WD40. Would a release agent or brake cleaner give me better results? I also removed clocks today and am now thinking i may have to pay subaru for a new speed sensor as the clock is not cable driven.

Can you borrow a speed sensor to see if it cures the problem? It MAY be the speedo itself

As for cleaning, get hold of some carb cleaner. I THINK it's toluene based, or xylene. Either way, don't inhale it or get it on your hands

I have found a similar one at a friends garge i just need to extend the loom as the plug sits pretty much on top of sensor. I will pick some carb cleaner up. If i remove the TPS (in think thats what it is) could i leave it carb cleaner to soak over night?

Cheers
