I had new piston rings and big end bearing back in April. Just this last week on startup i get a huge cloud of smoke out the exhaust, but after a couple of minutes no smoke at all.
Is this normal or are the rings etc starting to go?

After a 5 min drive there is no smoke, it's just a really embarassing cloud on startup.

my96 Jap wrx with td05, hks suction kit, magnex straight thru, standard downpipe, res delete pipe and silicone elbows, catch can, and breathers.

Is the engine forged mate or was it a standard build and did you have the blocked honed to bed in to the new rings?

 

engine not forged and i boght it with receipts for all the work done totalling 1500, i doubt it would have been honed.

what is smoke on start up a sign of??

 

could be valve stem oil seals/also could be that the rings aren't bedding in and the bore is glazed up mate
