Default getting hot?

i was on my way to get shopping today when i was only about 1 mile from home and the engine temp went to about 3/4 up so i pulled into a garage to see if there was anything wrong ie water pipe etc

was nothing anywhere ... i filled it up with some water as it was the only thing near by.. Since then its been alright

i got some anti freeze etc while i was out to top it up again in the morning, could this just have happend due to low coolant, cos when i was at the garage the top rad hose was hot and the bottom one was cold.. but after a few squeeze's on the top hose while filling up with water when i got to asdas the bottom one was got as well as the top? is my rad on the way out ?

any help would be wicked

thanks
Joe

bleed your system and keep an eye on it every week and if you lose water again take it to a good garage to get it check

common problem is the end tank cracking on the rad, usually on drivers side. It only leaks when at high pressure when driving do very hard to spot until it gets pretty bad. have a look around any mould marks on the end tanks for hairline cracks or antifreeze residue around the area.

just search the net for a alloy race rad, they hold more water and keep the engine cooler

What cap you got on the header tank Joe ? sounds like your getting air in the system somewhere.

Cracked rad or a leaking header tank ? look around the chrome seal halfway down to see if its weeping.

I only mention the cap as sometimes the 1.3 rated caps can do more harm than good on standard rads and header tanks. .8 or .9 i forget the standard rating is far better unless you have an uprated/ally rad/header tank. At least so I have been told.

Cap is on the header tank, costs a few quid. Plastic end tanks are bound to be cracked if it's losing any water, mine was although only really visible after a good hot run.

update

i toped all my water up today and went for a quick drive to a stright road near me, so after pressing on the load pedel a bit i pulled in back home and it looks like the header tank cap is weeping letting water out

so looks like i need a new cap just need to find a good one

is this any good to replace it with?

yeah that will do but to be far you should only need a standard blue print one which you can pick up for 4 quid at your local auto factors and there 0.9 not 1.3 and a 0.9 one will be fine im using one and im running 390 bhp
