Default turbo advice

Hi I have searched the forum a bit for info but still not sure what should be my next step.

My current mods are:

stock ej205
vf43
sti tmic
pink injectors
walbro 255
2,5" exhaust

the car is a 2004 wagon pro tuned with ecutek, I have a conservative map to be nicer to the gearbox as the mapper said, about 1,25bar dont know the whp numbers as the car is mapped on open road.

Right now things starts to happen at 3000 rpm and 3600 i have full boost.

Lately I have been wondering wether to try another turbo and some questions arises. The car is a daily driver with the occational track day.
Looking to get as much tq and hp I can get and still have a driveble car. Point is for it to be a fast street car, I drive mostly on curvy b-roads.

What are the best turbos in this situation? Heard some nice stuff about the td18g, would it make sense to make such an upgrade? other input?

please dont flame my english btw.. I am scandinavian so try my best..

thanks

Your VF43 is 350+ bhp turbo, as is the 18g. Both, I believe, can make around 370+, if very lucky.

I think the VF's tend to spool quicker than the like-for-like TD's. So really you're gaining nothing swapping to a 18g (aside from its inherent strength), based on your brief. If it's spool you're after, then instead I'd go for the roller-bearing VF34 - great spool-up and can make 360 if lucky too. Or if you cant find one, then the regular sleeve bearing VF35 is a similar spooler, at the expense of outright power (c.340bhp) - and much cheaper than the 34 to boot.

Or there're the SC36 and SC40 Billets. As the name suggests they have lightweight billet comp wheels for less inertia which gives great spool-up, whilst still maintaining decent top end, as the comp wheel can be "one size bigger" due to the fact that it has less mass to start off with.

As much as I would like to sell you an 18G there is no great performance advantage over a VF39 or a VF43 so I don't think it would be good logic to go for an 18G in your circumstances.
I have an APS SS42 for sale brand new £999. Have a look in the for sale section. That would get you over 400 bhp and show a good power increase while still on standard internals.

yes 400 sounds a lot for my poor block, or what do you say Harvey (and others..). Would be happy with 350. Dont think I've got that now.. would guess 290-300.. I just bought a sti 6 speeder so that part should be ok

South of 350. But you're prob producing around at least that figure at the mo with your VF43, anyway...

I don't know because I have not run one myself. APS specifically intended the APS SS42 as a turbo for street cars of 2 litres.

Please do not misinterpretate what I have said.

The VF43 and VF39 are both capable of 350 bhp and possibly a little more. That does not mean that the O.P. is producing that power.

The 18G will typically do 360 bhp with the necessary supporting mods just like the 39 and 43 need supporting mods to develop full potential.

If the OP has ambitions for 400 bhp then he needs a turbo with that potential and the SS42 is such a turbo.

Now if the OP wants to know what mods he needs with that turbo to get 400 bhp I will be happy to assist him.
The stock EJ205 and gearbox are quite capable of that by the way and it is a 2004 car.

Glad we got that cleared up.

i am not getting at you Harvey. the OP asked for a 400hp turbo you gave him the options. what i was getting at that he will need a load more modification to achieve a "proper" 400hp car.

I suppose, therefore, it's roughly comparable to the MD321H, SC40 Billet and the HS TD05H 20g or AF TD05H 20g turbos?

I cannot comment on the SC40 Billet as I have never run one or owned one and I cannot remember if I have seen the graph. The three turbos you mention, the MD321H and Andy F TD05 20G and my TD05 20G are not in my experience genuine 400 bhp turbos. That said, one of mine did 406.9 bhp last week but that is the exception rather than the rule. The same goes for other popular 20Gs we have fitted for clients, one of which only made 359 on a reasonably well sorted 2.5.
The OP wants a 400 bhp turbo and I offered him a genuine 400 bhp turbo and it is for that reason that I did not offer one of my TD05 20Gs which I know perform very well but are not exactly what the guy needs.
Thanks Bigsinky. Yes he will need injectors to support 400 bhp and in this case I would advise 740cc and he will make his job a lot easier if he ditches the top mount in favour of a front mount. Internals and gearbox will not be an issue and he is already going for a six speed anyhow.

Yeah sorry I should have added "...closest to...". I know the 20g and 321H, on average, tend to do around 370-390 or so.
