Default car leaning out

guys i bow to your knowledge

recently blew my engine (rod through the block )
since then i have had a rebuilt engine fitted which was fine for a few days but since then the car has started running lean and has a rough idle

car is a uk 99 plate turbo v5/6
vf 24 turbo
fmic
reverse intlet
large induction filter
these are the only real engine modifications
and a straight through 3 inch exhaust

it does not always run like this it runs fine for a while and then feels like it has no power at all and runs lean

as you can imagine i dont really wish to blow another engine

it has had a replacement maf and ICV
replacement ECU by API as last one was keeping a open circuit on ICV
replacement engine with all new gaskets waterpump oil modine etc etc

i love this car but reaching the point of patients running very this

on idle my boost gauge is flickering around and car idles very poor

around 500 revs

i would appreciate any advice on this or if someone is local to birmingham that could take a look

i dont really fancy driving it far

cheers guys

not mapped yet wanted to get it running / idleing first before mapping as if there is a problem i dont think there would be much point spending the extra
thanks

So those mods were fitted without remapping when the last engine blew?
It needs mapping first to sort out the idling/low load problems.
Don't even try and go for max boost until that time.

As above

you shouldnt really be using it with those modifications without a remap...

You need a remap mate sooner rather than later and in your position I would be phoning Bob Rawle tomorrow. bob.rawle@btinternet.com

Bob Rawle is Swindon. I would suggest you be prepared to travel to get the best map as opposed to what Fred round the corner can do.

Even with the mods, the car should start and idle fine. It should drive off boost, ECU should be able to compensate for mods closed loop.

Seems like a sensor isn't working, perhaps lambda or water temp.

The mods you have are substantial. FMIC. Reversed inlet manifold. Large air filter. While you will be able to start and run the car you have already identified the car is running very weak. If you don't want another engine rebuild because you pick up a piston in the bore you need a remap as soon as possible and in the short term keep usage to a minimum and drive off boost. Any experiments to see what the car will do could very easily end up in grief.

im looking at getting it mapped next week

but in the mean time something is still a miss as will not idle

having discussed this with the mapper and others
im getting the same response

there is no reason it would not idle
im taking it to a local garage tonight who say they can read the ecu with there solaris code reader ??
i would like to get it at least idleing beofre i take it for mapping

is there a way to test lambda water temp etc

many thanks

It may just be your idle control valve need adjusting. Surely your mapper will take car of this during mapping? Who are you using ?

well i bit the bullet tonight and started ripping the car apart to see if i can find the problem

and YAY found it

both plugs in the left hand head as you look at the block were very loose

tightened them up and shes back YAY

thanks for all your help again guys

why is it always the last thing you check

everything pointed to a sensor or air leak but nope plugs

one last thing is it normal for plugs to work loose

only had the engine built and fitted recently and now plugs loose seems a little odd

thanks

Give Mark at Thwaites Developments in Warwick a ring, he will sort you out with mapping and any other work required.
