Default Smoking turbo after radiator change

Hi Everybody
Hope someone can help me , Just change my water radiator because it was leaking fitted the second hand one and filled it up and followed a guide to bleeding it by taking the small pipe from top radiator off at header tank and bleed it by pressing the fat top rad pipe than it says to make sure theres no air trapped take the pipe that goes from turbo to header tank and do the same . done everything that way and it was all fine, heater on and fan comes on , anyway just took the wife to work , only 5 mins or so there and same coming back but when i pull onto my drive and stopped there was loads of smoke coming from all vents , like it was on fire under the bonnet , smelt the smoke before opening the bonnet and it smelled like burning plastic/electical bits not an oily smell , lifted the bonnet and seen the smoke coming from the turbo , got under the car to make sure no plastic was stuck to it and there was,nt , anyone got any ideas , did,nt drive to get the turbo hot in the 10 mins. Do you think it was something to do with taking the turbo water pipe off .

please help car needed every day,.

They do smoke a lot if you spill any coolant on the turbo. Has happened a couple of times to me, let it burn off and it should settle down. As long as your oil and coolant levels holkd you'll be fine

Cheers jon

I hope so , i nearly s**t myself thinking my car was going to burn to a crisp on my drive . So you don,t think its anything bad just coolant on the turbo . nothing to do with taking that turbo pipe off.

If it doesn't clear up after a good run it'll be worth further investigation, but in my experience it'll clear up after a good run, unless you see traces of coolant from any of the pipes or the header tank.

Thanks jon , will give a little spin tomorrow to see if it stops smoking , i did overfill the header tank and blown all the excess over the turbo but surely it would of dried up after about 5 hours of sitting there. kev

Nope, you should have seen the smoke after I removed the turbo and spilt coolant on my wrapped headers. Still smoked after an hour of high speed runs during a remap session

Cleared up now though

The turbo is water cooled, so make sure there is flow into and out.

Glad you got it sorted, it is quite worrying when you don't expect it

Try running the car for the first time when you've freshly wrapped some headers
