TDO4L turbo advice please? With pics.
Im in the process of getting a UK MY96 turbo wagon back on the road after a year of it sitting about. It was aquired to break originally, but i have a soft spot for it and id like to see it back on the road given its age and condition(for a UK car).
Whilst giving it a quick service, i was getting familiar with the cooling system before refilling it and i came across a blanked off pipe leading from the top of the header tank which im puzzled by
The pipe running off the top of the header tank:
Runs to here and is then blanked off:
Before i realised it was blanked off i assumed it was the cooling return from the turbo.
After poking about i then discovered there appears to be no pipes to attatch cooling hoses to the turbo on this car. I cant locate the inlet pipe either which prob means there is another blanked off pipe somewhere.
Are all TD04 turbos water cooled? It has a chimney/funnel type thing channeling air from the bonnet scoop, but surely a highly strung car like this doesnt just rely on air cooling for the turbo?
Can someone more knowledgeable with Subarus advise me please?
Id appreciate any advice! Thanks

1st things 1st your car should have a tdo5 turbo fitted as standard, and if for some unknown reason a previous owner at some point fitted a tdo4 it will be water cooled

I thought i was missing something totally obvious lol.
To be honest, it wouldnt surprise me if the turbo has been swapped, in fact, im not entirely convinced the engine is the original either.
Im still confused as to why someone would block off cooling to the turbo.
So there is definately no turbos which are only air cooled?
So chances are the TD04 turbo on mine is prob off a car other than a Subaru then?

have you looked to see if it has the fittings on the turbo cartridge for the water feeds (they are on the intercooler side of the turbo) unless your exhaust system has been modified then i find it highly unlikely that the turbo would off another type of vehicle due to the subaru specific turbo inlet flange, this is the turbo you should have fitted to your car,

Ill maybe have to shell out for a TD05 as there is deffo no water feeds on the turbo. Are they detatchable? Looks like there are just bolts where the water feeds should be.
The worrying thing is i ran about for a month in the car when i got it before i pulled it off the road. Surprised i didnt fry the turbo

this link shows a picture of a tdo4 with the coolant pipes fitted, they are removable and are retained by banjo bolt fitting, if you get a tdo5 turbo to replace what you have fitted make sure it comes complete with coolant pipes and oil return pipe,

Looks like they have been removed then. The bolts are there just not the cooling feeds. Another example of this cars strange history. Why would someone remove the turbo cooling? Weird
Ill be looking to go for a TD05 then i think.
If the car is meant to have a TD05 then that might explain the violent misfire/boost the car had for the month i drove it. If its mapped for a bigger turbo then the ECU will be wondering why its spooling up so fast lol

it will also be worth checking to see if the ecu is standard or modified.

that turbo doesnt look like its of your year car anyway mate coz its a front entry an yours should be a 90 degree inlet an the water pipe feed pipe your looking for should be below your acuator i think on your pic you can see it its rapped in head proof flexy foil
