depending on spec and use of engine, then 10w60 isnt the best choice of oil as it has a large operating range which means it will in effect break down quicker.

Search out some posts on here by oilman and that will explain it all.

Yes, just playing with your spelling of ester (chemical description of some of the synthetic molecules used) you used in the thread title.

Your oil requirements depends on usage, so hard to say. But a 60 weight oil is really only needed for prolonged track use or high speed runs IMO, if your car is a highly modified road car that sees occaisional track then i would go for a 10w50, Silkolene Pro S is my choice.

If its only slightly modded and doesn't see tracks then any decent 10w40

Why the 40 vs 50 difference, standard car vs modded / track car?

Cheers, TX.

Basically the hotter they get, the thinner they get - 40 or 50 is the viscocity at 100 degrees C, however on track you can get oil temps higher than that - what is the viscocity of the 40 weight oil at 120 deg C?

A good 40 oil will still be near a 40 at 120C, a basic one will be a lot thinner.

For the car in question, with a fully modded engine, a 10w-50 will be the best choice, a 10w-60 is too thick.
