Default weird whining noise not sure where form

i was driving home the other day and all was fine then i decided to give it a little bit of 1st.2nd gear and then straight after that it made a weird whining noise like the sound of an eletric motor or somthing, i got home put it in netrual and reved the engine and it was still there left the car for 20 minutes and it had gone give some beans no problems , today i was going home from work and all is fine then i give it some beans in 3rd and the noise is back and its there when i rev it in neutral , p.s this has only started to happen this last two days wear there is lots of water ont he motorway, could this be the gear box or the crank, or pulleys at the front of the engine or clucth over run or even the turbo or maybe the power steering just not sure runing 3 month old 20g fully foregd engine six speed gear box 2002 box, 98 wrx....,............. i thought id put this in this section to as well has the drive train just for some views on what this might be

Mine is doing exactly the same, whining and noticed a power steering leak from the long U-shaped hard pipe that runs along the front of the radiator. whines with acceleration and when in neutral and sepecially when cornering. also when parked it whines (but not as loud) when you turn the wheel, especially against the stops. Supercharger sound is quite a good way to escribe it, but i get some weird sporadic grating aswel. I think it has been been leaking a bit for ages as the noise often used to come and go but now its leaking bad enough that its sprayed onto the bonnet and has become really noisy. I now also get a shuddering through the wheel occasionally when putting quite alot of lock on (e.g. a junction).

Just thought i would list all my symptoms too to help anyone else as its not immidiately obvious what the noise is!

oh and what power steering fluid do i replace it with?
cheers
Ash
