Default Stolen from engine

Hi all,

I came home from holiday to find someone had stolen the front grill, broken into the engine bay and removed what I presume is the air filter from my Impreza MY99.

Apologies for my utter newbieness and lack of mechanical knowledge, but could someone confirm exactly what's been removed in the picture below?

Any suggestions for a decent replacement would be welcomed. My car's completely unmodified, but I'd be happy to fit a modest upgrade.

Thanks in advance,

Noggin

Air box lid and Maf sensor mate. Mafs are expensive which is probably what they wanted.

Someone's half-inched the airbox top and mass airflow tube and sensor. The filter's still there - it's the red corrugated bit. The theft target will presumably have been the MAF sensor as these are known to fail. If there's any karma around, yours will have been on its way out and thus the miscreant will end up blowing his/her engine up.

As far as replacements are concerned, there's only one - the standard one. You can't "upgrade" it without incurring the cost of an ECU remap.

The bad news is that buying everything brand new from a main dealer is going to cost you a fair bit. The most cost-effective way forward would be to get an airbox top and MAF tube from someone like Grade A Subaru, and then buy a new sensor insert from your main dealer (part number 22794AA010, around £100).

Do not rely on a secondhand sensor - as above there's a significant risk in buying one that's failing.

That'd be an option, but the only downside is that the MAF tube isn't included, looking at that pic. Without one of those you need to buy the full sensor assembly, inc tube, from a main stealer, and I believe the price on those is still f'ing ridiculous, something over £200 - despite the fact that the sensor insert should be the "expensive" bit, and is available on its own for £100. So, you're basically paying another ton for a(n albeit accurately) moulded fibre reinforced plastic pipe!

I have the maf tube, if you can replace it with the correct size pipe you can have my MAF tube for a straight swap.
Its no good to me as im running a Simtek anyway. Should save you a few quid.
Im sure Splitpin could come up with the correct size

Yeah I know MAF/tube isn't included.

Just thought I'd try to help the OP out, by seeking out an airbox lid (full airbox in this case) as I knew how relatievly 'rare' the MY97-00 pattern one was. Actually that Grade A one is a bit steep. OP prob best to seek out Imprezas being broken on eBay and see if he can get one much cheaper...

As you say, OP best to grit his teeth and buy a brand new MAF - simply not worth the ballache risking a 2nd hand one of unknown condition. At least the MY99/00 ones aren't c.£260 like brand new MY93-98 ones are! (I think)

Thanks to everyone who's replied and pm'd for the good advice and kind words, it's much appreciated!

So it sounds like I need the following:

MAF - £100: Subaru Impreza Air Flow Meter MAF Genuine Parts 22794AA010

Air Box - £42 from this link, or potentially cheaper if I can find a Scooby being broken: Subaru impreza Air Box 99UK/RB5/P1/STI 4,5,6 on eBay (end time 16-Mar-10 16:49:51 GMT)

A MAF Tube from johnlogie (cheers!). I'm a bit confused when you say I need to replace it with the correct size pipe. On slipstream_uk's pic, which part is the tube and which is the pipe?

Thanks again guys, you've cheered me up after a ****ty Sunday!

All he means is he wont have anything to fit to his car if he gives you his MAF tube.
He would need a bit of pipe roughly the same diameter to attach his air filter assembly to.
(With the aftermarket Simtek ECU he can throw away all that guff related to MAF sensors and just have a bit of pipe with an air filter on the end of it..) Much easier.

On the Ebay link you provided you can see on the top of the lid some bolts sticking out, this is where the MAF tube bolts to and you will need it to fit the MAF sensor to.

mine got broken into when the lad i bought it off had it, they pulled the grill off to get under the bonnet, then nicked the bonnet, spoiler and 1 headlight. the grill was still loose when i got it so ive put 2 big cable ties through the holes on top of the grill and tied it on so that theiving scum cant pull it off and get in again.

Thanks Fuzz. For the moment I've pushed my car to another location to hopefully avoid the fekers coming back and striping the rest of the car.

johnlogie, I've PM'd you regarding the MAF tube.

I may be able to sort you out with the air box with lid and the standard MAF piping / tube.
I no longer require these parts as I've fitted a version 4 airbox with a Nissan Z32 MAF

let me know what bits you still need and I'll go hunting for them in my garage

Essbon, ratboy, thanks very much for the offers!

Essbon, I've sent you a PM. If I could grab the box and tubing off you then that would solve all my woes in one, bar getting the MAF sensor itself.
