Fuelab FTW!
I bought a brand new genuine 3-port from a US vendor on eBay - £109 inc. shipping!! But £30 import costs (i.e. £17 VAT and, get this... bloody Parcelforce fee of £13! WTF?!)
Still, £139 all in delivered for a brand new 3-port FL - how cool is that? Only took about a full working week to arrive too lol.

Here's a few more obvious questions that come to mind here than an FPR:
- was the fuel pump uprated at the same time as the injectors supposedly were?
- what kind of fuel are you running in it? If you're not already running Shell Vpower, try putting a couple of tanks of that through and see if it makes a difference.
- if the injectors really were uprated, just how much bigger are they? On a classic you should be able to identify most of the common available sizes from the colour.

Yes OP, find out all the stuff first that 172 and mark state.
Fuel reg prob only really needed to accurately control >/=550cc inj. and beyond >350bhp. A lot of people run big bhp on just the stock FPR (not advisable if an early Classic though, simply due to the FPR's age, if nothing else....)

Well, if it's sitting doing nothing, then by all means fit it.... BUT... NOT if it's one of those £20-40 eBay specials! The FPR is a very important element and £20-40 is far too cheap (bearing in mind there's a also a meaningful profit margin in built in to the price anyway!!!). If it's a Fuelab, Aeromotive, Sard, SX, etc, then by all means fit it as it will actually WORK PROPERLY and is new, unlike your OEM original.
However, I'm currently running 282bhp on the stock FPR (17 years old!) - and my PFC Commander shows no dodgy IDC activity i.e. fuel startvation/oscillation, etc....

Your not going to gain anything by fitting it.
Your car should be mapped to the injectors its fitted with, you change anything such as fuel pressure, injector size etc etc then it will require further mapping tweeks....

No it didn't but I got a 7bar/100psi glycerine gauge from Temple Tuning.
Fuelab:
FUELAB FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR 51501-C 51502-C -6/-10AN : eBay Motors (item 250322874513 end time Mar-04-10 12:55:55 PST)
If you offer $129.99 he'll accept (it's apparently the best he can do )
Gauge:
Fuel Pressure Glycerin Gauge for FSE Power Boost Valve on eBay (end time 09-Feb-10 22:59:53 GMT)
Looks like they're out of 'em. Don't worry though, do a search and there are others that sell that gauge, for a bit more...

Heard too many horror stories re the FSE FPR on turbo cars! Don't take that chance!
BTW, that link above is just for a gauge. He's just added "FSE" as a marketing keyword - as the FSE "Power Valve" (FPR) is a common mod amongst the Nova and Saxo boys out there. So when they see "FSE" they go mad!....
