I heard that it possible the fuel lines where the rubber meets metals pipes..... The rubber doesnt contract like the metal pipe in the cold.... could be this mate. I have a minor issue in the same way as yours, generally when im stationary and ive got the Aircon on. Not too concerned yet though, If the issue persists then i'll get it sorted, however until then i'll leave it until the summer where i'll sort it in the later sunset nights

Without hijacking the thread for my own use, whilst this could be the case for the OP, mine isnt the injectors or filter. The smell was there before my mods, and as you have both said above^^ I ended up installing new fuel injectors and filter along the path of my mini project, however the smell persists. I spoke to scoobyteknx about it, they also think it might be as above, rubber to metal contracting, thus seaping slighly

I had a very bad smell of fuel a while back and was convinced it was from under the bonnet, turned out it was the seal around the fuel pump under the rear seat,it may help you out mate.

Do a search of here for smell of fuel and all the datails are there.
Just had my Bugeye done.

Part number
17544AA135 Pipe complete fuel return £91.93
807707140 Hose-7.5 x 13.5 x 94 £16.41
14035AA421 Gasket-Intake Manifold x2 £14.36

Parts Total £122.70
Plus 3 - 4 hours labour
So budget between £300 - £450 (depending on labour costs)

and don't forget the VAT...

some times this can be something to do with the canister purge system ? dont know why but in the service manual it mentions this having a smell of fuel when worn/damaged , on the classic pre facelift models its the big circular canister on the front drivers side of the engine next to where the air filter box is ?
i know the canister is linked into the fuel tank somehow as the diagram shows this

If its a bugeye, it's more than likely going to be the fuel line issue under the inlet manifold- i'm led to believe this as you say the fault only happens when cold.

Take a look at this thread on SouthEastScoobies, contains the Subaru bulletin about it! I'm fitting Perrin Fuel rails in the next couple of weeks to cure mine!

Cheers all,
I have a new walbro fuel pump on it's way as we chat, so will replace the fuel lines at the same time, although may have to wait till next month as the 50000 service about to be booked up with Xtreme.
