Why not? A TD04L is what it is.

Tell us how much power you want and how much you want to spend to get it, and we can tell you what the ideal upgrade is. Without knowing your goals, it's impossible to answer your question in a manner that'll be relevant to you.

you could squeeze 300bhp but no more out of a good td04 with correct supporting mods

I have a vf35 on my blob wrx, makes in the region of 330 - 340bhp with similar torque, makes for a good car on the road, faster than most

TD04 - more often than not you will be looking at approx max of 280bhp.

Above that and you will want some sti pink injectors and a fuel pump.

Put on a VF35 and you have 330 ish bhp. (with remap)

Andy Forresst hybrid td04 is good for up to 320 bhp with supporting mods(+ a lot more torque),and may be an option you want to consider if you like the quick spool up time that your car currently produces.

VF35 will fit straight in (can the TD04's existing oil/water lines be reused too?)

The TD05H 16g will either need a new front entry compressor cover - or the snorkel cut off, etc. Unless you get AF's own 16g...

The OEM TD05H 16g were only fitted to MY93-96 cars where the inatake enters via the top. To facilitate this, the turbo's comp cover has a cast upturned 'snorkel'. Cars from MY97>on have their intakes going under the inlet manifold i.e. a more direct, less restrictive route. The means that turbos for these MYs have a comp cover which has a 'normal' circular collar on, as per what's fitted to your Blobeye's TD04 (see pic below...)

But rather than get a 2nd hand one (of unknown life left in it) and having to spend more on moddiing the cover or get a new FE one fitted, why not get one of AF's modded 16g complete with FE comp cover:-

AFP5-16 - is based on the 90 degree inlet TD05 16G from the 93-96 cars and can also be converted to front entry to suit 97 onward cars(see pic below). This turbo is very popular on installations aiming for up to 340bhp. It is available as a fully re-manufactured unit or new. This turbo will typically spool up to 1 bar boost by 3000rpm and full boost by 3300rpm.

£350 +VAT exchange or £600 +VAT new outright (includes 12 months warranty)

See here:-
http://www.andyforrestperformance.co.uk/16307.html

Spools up a bit earlier than an OEM one too - full boost by 3300rpm (instead of about c.3500-3700 for the OEM one).
