Default Strange oil warning and slight knocking problem!

I’ve had my 06 STI for a few months but recently its developed an unusual intermittent problem. All started when I noticed a slight knocking sound from somewhere within the bonnet when at very low revs, usually when just moving off. It didn’t sound like the dreaded “knocking” sound from the engine – I’ve experienced that in my old wrx! But unfortunately i cant localise where the sounds originating. Few days later, while waiting to get the car looked at by a Subaru dealer I noticed that the oil warning light started coming on, again intermittently. So I immediately checked the oil and it was nearly at the max point on the dipstick. Nonetheless I topped it up to the max line. Following that the knocking and the oil warning light problem disappeared for a few weeks. But last night I heard the knocking again and saw a few flashes of the oil warning light.

Any thoughts will be much appreciated.

Specs for info:
2006 sti with PPP
32K miles
Last serviced at 30K 4 months ago
Standard apart from a back box and centre section.

Or a cracked oil pick-up pipe killing the engine slowly, do you have an oil pressure gauge fitted ?

if i were you i would get it checked out properly by a scooby specialist before you do more damage. oil pressure light coming on is not good, especially with the ej20 chocolate bearings.

Unfortunately I don’t have an oil pressure gauge. But thanks for the advice guys. The cars still under warranty so might take it to a Subaru dealer. But since the problem is intermittent, hopefully I can convince them to do a proper check rather than a quick drive around!

Also, can anyone recommend a good Subaru specialist in the Manchester area?

Thanks for the info Nick. I dropped it off at a local Subaru dealer to get it checked out. Just waiting for a phone call with some news.

Unfortunately the outcome is not good! It is a cracked oil pipe as some of you suggested and they are just striping it down to see the state of the crank and bearings!
