Default prefacelift header gaskets & heat shield question

im soon going to be changing the header gaskets on my 94 wrx because i think there leaking & i just want to replace them for peice of mind, one side seems to have the heat sheild missing & the other is still in tack are these necessary? gasketwise ive got 2 x Head to Exhaust Manifold Gaskets & one 1 x Manifold to up Pipe Gasket heard these are prone to leaking, there seems to be another gasket at the front joining them together is it worth replacing this one aswell? cheers in advance Mark

If you want to get it done right first time you'll need the two gaskets that join the link pipe to the two branches of the exhaust manifold. Beware of cheap stamped pattern parts, they don't seal anywhere near as well as genuine multi-layer ones.

The standard heatshields are better than nothing, but on a car of that age the ones that are still there are likely to be deteriorating and rattle-candidates. So, you could always get some heatwrap and insulate the open one, or, even better, do the lot.

cheers for the quick advice mate, are the link pipe gaskets the same as the manifold to up pipe gasket? i'll try & refit the heat sheild for the time being if i can, but like you say all the bolts are corroded so might not be possible, & get it heat wrapped when ive got abit more money, what sort of length heatwrap normally covers them? cheers

They're not the same as the up-pipe gasket, they're smaller. Heat wrap, varies depending on how tight you wrap, how much overlap etc. If you're using the 2 inch stuff, 20m for a complete set from engine to turbo is probably in the ballpark.

i've had a look on importcarparts site where i got the other genuine gaskets from & cant seem to see these ones i'll have to give them a call cause i don't have much luck ordering parts from my local Subaru, i was just going to replace all the gaskets to the up pipe because looking at the turbo to up pipe nuts think i'll have a hell of a job getting these off there all corroded & rounded off, where abouts do you get your wrap from im looking for something abit cheaper this time as the dei stuff i did the downpipe in cost me a fortune? cheers Mark

That is is where a twist socket set comes in so handy to remove rusted and rounded bolts/nuts. Personally if the bolt/nut has any sign of not doing its job next time i always replace it so job is easier for myself or next person working on it.

sorry what do you mean by a twist socket set? i've been looking at the Irwin 5 piece bolt grip nut set is this the same sort of thing? i have all new bolts to replace the nuts & a few spare studs aswell, if i manage to undo the 3 turbo to up pipe nuts & obviously all the maniford nuts etc will it drop down off the turbo as one or do i need to remove the manifold from the up pipe first? cheers Mark
