Default Engine management light help !!!

Looking for some help with a problem a mate of mine has

The check engine light keeps coming on intermitantly?

Car details:
MY99 uk 200turbo wagon

Mods:
K & N Cone filter (put on after the problem started)
Stainless scooby sport exhaust turbo back
18" alloys
Lowered 40mm
centre pod with defi gauges(Oil temp, boost, oil pressure)

As the light goes on and off its quite strange also the car drove like a bag of **** then died but started and drove normaly after.

Any ideas ???? thanks in advance.

hi mate had same sort of problem with myne its not very common but it a little valve that tumbles the air when the fuel burns get it sorted because when you leave it like i did it eventually keeps engine man light on and wont allow turbo to kick in and runs at about 30 mph. i took it two three garages and could not find proplem it was subaru that found it. now im not saying its that but sounds like what i had . have you run it on normal unleaded. that what i think did myne when fuel was at 130 a litre i thought it would be ok obviously not. be warned it did cost me £850 yes ouch................ good luck

I have intermitent engine light but my car runs fine. I usually get it when there is a big change in the weather e.g. hot one day they cold the next. I have heard aftermarket exhaust systems can cause this or quite commonly the knock sensor. A replacement knock sensor for a classic usually costs around £150 give or take. Hope this helps

I only paid £58 posted for a Genuine one from flea bay.If your one only plays up when there's a change in the weather it could be the temp sender

Ah yes true it could be. I may monitor it a little closer to see if it is due to weather changes, then price up a temp sensor. What is the sensor like that you got off the bay? was it a genuine subaru part ?
