Default Help - smoking on cold start up

I went to look at an Impreza Import yesterday (WRX, 97 P reg, 65,000 miles). It smoked on start up when cold. No smoke any other time, idle or high revs. Car looks good and drives well. Jap service history only.

Has anyone had this problem? Is it something serious or is it a simple problme to fix? At the moment it is putting me off buying the car. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

When you mean smoke, do you mean blue, white or vapour?

You get the normal water vapour out of the exhaust which is transparent, if its thick white (none transparent) smoke then I would say there was an issue and walk away, otherwise its normal

Hmmm it could be something or nothing, if it doesnt do it next time then you "may" be ok, but I would advise getting the car checked out by a speciallist or the likes just to be sure

Someone has told me that it is normal as it has a catalytic convertor - any views?

It happened once on my first classic after some hard driving, it only happened the once, so its not a daily occurrence, still say its best to get the car inspected if your interested in this car
